Last year my ferritin levels had sunk to 10. I had a lot of other GI issues too and came to the conclusion that celiac's/a gluten allergy was behind it.
Over the summer I trained 50+ miles a week at 1.5 miles altitude, taking 135 mg of elemental iron a day (in the form of 3 Slow FE pills). My GI issues were gone and my ferritin rose to 63.
As the season continued, my recovery from races/workouts decreased, but I figured it was just because I hadn't had as long of a season before. Turns out my ferritin dropped back down under 30. I've still been taking 2-3 Wegmans' brand slow release iron pills a day and my intestines are feeling SO much better than all of last year.
What do the experienced runners of Let's Run think? The biggest changes I can think of are switching from Slow FE to Wegmans brand, and going from a clean kitchen in my summer apartment to a kitchen with roomies that LOVE to BAKE and not clean the counters (flour...). I'm not sure if cross contamination can simply affect absorption and not GI issues though..
please let me know what you guys think!
