One Indoor National HS Meet in 2011

The ability to have one Indoor Nationals made was also made simple by the fact that the NSIC/MAC meet had not been given a 2011 date by the Armory. Their (MAC) current financial problems and significant outstanding debts related to the previous NSIC events did not serve them well. Remember the Armory only was the site for the NSIC event and it is their choice who to give dates to. NSIC for the last 2 years with the NSSF event in Boston was no longer attracting the big names and overall performance comparisons had demonstrated a strong shift of overall quality to the NSSF meet in Boston.

With regards to NXN and FL, you won't see a merge any time in the next millennial. FL brings nothing to the table that Nike cannot do or hasn't already accomplished with the success of NXN. If FL decided to pack it in, the NXN event can accommodate the participants and already has an individual/team event which better serves the sport.

So is the nike meet in Boston not happening this year?

indoor is a joke. Some states don't even run it and everyone knows its outdoors that counts.

The former Nike Indoor Nationals is now the New Balance Indoor Nationals. The indoor and outdoor national meets are owned by the NSSF and had been previously sponsored by Adidas, then Nike, and now New Balance.* Nike owns NXN, but hires the NSSF to help put on the meet at both the national and regional levels.

*I could be wrong about the sponsors of the previous NSSF meets (pre Nike sponsorship), but you get the point.

Okay. What about NSIC?

NSIC and NSSF were both holding indoor national meets, but it sounds like the NSSF (New Balance Indoor Nationals) will be the only one this winter.

Wow, now no more watered down indoor meets at the end of the season. All those poor coaches who were counting All-americans will actually have to earn them to some degree, indoors is definately less comp than outdoors.

No plans for any national event in Boston this year.

NSIC which was owned and managed by the Metropolitan Athletic Congress (MAC)had initially been developed and managed by the NSSF in it's early years such as Pathmark, etc. In the mid to late 1990's, the NSSF split off and started their own indoor championships with sponsorship from Nike. NSIC never had any major form of sponsorship and essentially drew 85% of their entries from the metropolitan area and very little from around the country. The NSSF indoor event truly drew a national participation and entry list.

The NSIC meet is essentially no longer in existence and the MAC had not been granted any Armory dates for 2010-2011. There is no NSIC event for 2011 at the Armory. A more professionally run event that is focused on the athlete with outstanding fields has always been the trademark of NSSF events. NSIC will not be missed at all.

The new Indoor Nationals event is wholly owned by the NSSF with New Balance as the title sponsor and the Armory functioning as the site. Event info can be found at

One who knows - I think your saying that something "better serves the sport" is rather self-serving. FL/Kinney was set up to be able to access individuals rather than wade through the myriad rules pertaining to teams and state rules. Individuals could compete unattached much more easily than through "made-up" club teams, which really aren't club teams at all, but defacto HS teams (as per the rules for NXN).

That NXN, as is constantly espoused on various posts, is a good idea doesn't devalue (except for coaches with their own agendas and Nike shills) what FL has provided FOR the INDIVIDUAL. That doesn't make something better - it's just a personal opinion that you (and others as well) favor. That things are different better encapsulates what each are trying to deliver - but this debate has too often been reduced to categorizing those who want to develop themselves individually (or don't even have teams) as somehow not a "team player". That kind of mindset is rather unfortunate and says more (and not kindly) about the "team" attitude and less about the individual who wants simply to get a competitive opportunity in a national level meet. There is also far too much crap about having to have a National Championship. Why? What does it really accomplish except to load HS athletes with even more pressure. There is NO national championship outdoor meet - except perhaps for USATF age-groups - so why the need for XC or Indoor?

You are correct as there are no official national high school championships. The sport, teams and the student athletes have chosen to identify certain events as such.

New Balance Outdoors - has been identified as the Nationals by those competing

New Balance Indoors - will now be identified as the Nationals with the elimination of the NSIC event

NXN - has been identified as the team nationals with individual national champs as well

FL - has also been identified as an individual national championships for many years

USATF Summer Events - have never been considered national championships by high school athletes

For clarity purposes only, there was no merger or combining of the 2 indoor events staged by the NSSF and MAC. There will be no role nor inclusion of NSIC/MAC in the New Balance Indoor event. The NSIC event is no longer at the Armory and and unless they decide to seek another site which is unlikely that event no longer exists. The NSIC event was never part of the new partnership in any way, shape or form at any time.

Incorrect. The Asics Boston Holiday Challenge (aka, "pre-nats") returns to the Reggie on December 27.

Surprising. There is no high school indoor event known as pre-nationals and never has been. In the past, there have been 2 indoor nationals one in Boston the NSSF/NIN and at the Armory NSIC/MAC. Also, outside of the NSSF/NIN meet in Boston there has never been a high school event of national scope or that has drawn student athletes from around the country at Reggie Lewis Center besides NSSF/NIN and the special high school Reebok miles.

Guess One Who Knows More doesn't know much or maybe he is thinking of a different sport. Of course, someone could start an event or rename an event and call it whatever they wish. Sounds like this might have been a local high school event in the past looking to attract out-of-town athletes over the holiday break or an event that had attempted to use the NSSF/NIN event as a draw. Again, there has NEVER been an indoor high school event referred to or known as pre-nats to the sport and certainly not to the athletes country wide.

Also, events that get identified as pre-nats in stature are usually or always held at the facilities and/or sites where the FINALS or CHAMPIONSHIPS are held such as Terre Haute collegiate CC and Portland Meadows high school CC events. How then can you call or identify an event not at the site/facility of the finals and/or championship event pre-nationals? Doesn't sound right using that analogy.

Only problem is, is that it is a typical mass meet with only mass teams, a few out of state teams, but just the same ole mass meet.

One of the national meets was held in Boston in 2009 and 2010. Also, it was scheduled to be held there again in 2011 (dates had been booked with the RLC). Thus it maked sense for the Boston Holiday meet to be labeled a pre-national meet if it is held at the same site as the nationals and is open to all high school athletes.
