I am a lowly high school coach, coaching what would be considered a poor program by most of the lets run "experts". But, I have sent a number of kids to college, getting money. No Olympic Trials competitors, just decent runners who love the sport.
So far, two of them have shown steady improvement after high school and they go to NAIA and D3 schools.
The D1 scholarship kids have gotten injured and some have quit the sport all-together.
I always questioned their summer training- there were workouts like repeat 1000's or 800's, even hill workouts.
I remember in the 70's talking to college runners who were told to do up to 100 mpw in the summer- just running, no workouts.
I even had one coach ask me what I did different because the kid showed very little improvement after high school and was always injured after having NO injuries in high school.
Who knows? Maybe Aris is a great coach and the college people aren't as good.
