What!, so Derrick gets third, or fifth every year, big deal! The other guys from OK State get 3rd, or 10th every year.

This has been beaten to death already, but XC is a team race. If you go out too hard and blow up like David McNeil or Dan Chenoweth did, you're screwing over your whole team. This is why Derrick and Fernandez ran conservatively the first half then picked things up the second half.
When it's a team race, you run for the team. When it's an individual race, both of these guys have shown they have balls. Remember GF leading the NCAA 1500 final from the gun two years ago as a freshman? That took big brass balls, and in the end he held them all off - Ulrey, Emanuel, all of 'em.

Personally I have to agree a bit. I think that the smart strategy is to sit back a bit and then make a move. Not to mention if you are truly running a team race then getting every point you can helps your team. In the case of Derrick I think he had a good shot at 3rd had he gone out smart like he had and then went after people at 5k. So in reality getting 3rd helps his team out in the team race. Also other than the top couple of teams I disagree with the team race idea. If you are on the 15th ranked team are you running for the team finish or yourself. I think in the end this is one of the reason why American's can't compete on the international level. Look at the top 4 from Monday 3 were from Africa because they generally run tougher.
