50? <40? <30? <20?! Different thresholds for training and racing?

This should lead to some classic letsrun flying bullshit.
"I only change from my shorts and singlet when it gets to 20 below"
50. But I hate being cold and I'm a panzy so others might disagree. I'm the wimp at practice that dresses warmly and looks at the other guys shivering with no shirts on. Thankfully we had immaculate weather this fall for XC and I never had to wear tights. I might wear tights in early track meets in the spring, but my April it's usually getting to be pretty warm out. I think there is a bit of a mental aspect to wearing tights in races, and my teamates try to avoid them at all costs because they think that tights will slow them down. Instead of thinking like that, I try and think of advantages I'm gaining by being warm so that I am ready to race. But really just don't try to think about it too much. If you're too cold, just throw on some warm clothes and go run!
I've never worn tights in a race, although I've never raced outside much below 40. In training, maybe below 50. But then I usually wear warm up type pants. I've trained thru winters in MN in 0 or colder, but what's the point of paying to race in that sht?
My threshold is about 45. I love cold weather running--after suffering through Mississippi summers, you would too--and ran a 10-mile PR in a championship race last January where the temperature on the starting line was 17 degrees. I add tights when it drops into the low 40s; gloves when it drops into the mid-30s. I don't wear a hat unless it's in the 20s.
Barnabas Kirui and the other Kenyans on the Ole Miss team wear tights and warmup jackets when it's in the 50s. I don't know whether they actually feel cold at that temperature or whether they're deliberately overdressing while training to add some CV load.
Anything below 37 is tights weather for me for a normal training run. If I'm racing (short and fast) I stick with shorts down to about 25 (unless it's windy).
It's 20 right now and I'm just about to put on the heavier tights and head out for an easy 12....
for me its gloves first, then hat, tights are the last to go on. my legs dont really get cold. it has to be under 40 for me to consider tights
I go with a hat below 40, tights below 35-40 depending on wind, and gloves below 20. For some reason my hands never seem to get cold.
I get overheated really easy, so I run in shorts until it gets to about 25 degrees. If it is upper 20's, cloudy and really windy I may put on running pants then as well. My legs are just really uncomfortable with anything on them unless it is really cold.
I've worn short shorts at -12˚F. My lower legs always feel too warm in tights.
Depends on how long of a run, how fast, if it's sunny, or night-time, or windy. 40 or lower at night. 32 or lower in daytime.
I go by wind chills but my general rules are:
<50 = gloves
<40 = long sleeves
<30 = head wear
<20 = long sleeve shirt + short sleeve shirt
<10 = tights
I personally like the cold weather and tights always make my legs feel sluggish so I rarely wear them. I do wear some tight whities to keep the junk warm if it gets below 25 or so though.
below freezing or when it snows, but i will wear running shorts with a jacket and and gloves + a hat, once it is below 32 i put on some tights.
I don't own tights. I wear gloves and long sleeve shirt once it gets below 50, and a hat below 40.
Personally I wear them below 40-45, but that's mostly because if I don't my knees kill when they warm up.
45 long sleeves
<40 gloves and two shirts
<35 tights
<30 headband for ears and jacket
<25 hat
<15 (windchill) vaseline on face
psh, it's never too warm for tights! Okay, <45 is usually about what I do. I may wear them to watch D1 Nationals monday even though it isn't supposed to be that chilly.
I think it's bizarre when people are wearing tights when it's above 40 degrees, but then they think I'm bizarre for wearing shorts when it's 25 degrees out as well, so I try not to judge. My legs generally feel fine even in cold weather. For me though, wind speed and precipitation play a role. If it's calm and not snowing out I can run in shorts just fine in 20 or 25 degrees, but if it's 30, windy and snowing, I'll wear tights.
I also run shirtless until it's below about 45 degrees. That's just comfortable to me. Obviously most people are different.
i don't own tights either, but I'll wear running pants if its below 20 and windy. otherwise, just shorts
