Looking for some feedback here...
I work for a marathon. Our elite field is open now and will be until probably the day before our race goes off and that is in a few weeks. This year we also are giving a trials bonus to runners who qualify given the timing of our race in relation to the 2012 trials.
That being said, my colleague, also working for said marathon, is a "sub" elite runner with a 2:22.32 pr. He went to Chicago and melted with many others out there and ran a 2:23. He has decided he would like to try again and since it is not possible to run the marathon we work for, Houston is his next solid option.
Not so fast. The elite field is closed and he is currently listed as #20(!) on their elite waiting list. This I do not understand. And isn't their race still 3 months away?
As someone who works in the running industry and has an elite list of my own, why is their field so limited? We basically offer an unlimited elite field, but do NOT offer lodging and flights for anyone but a good group of the fastest. My colleague is obviously not looking for any of that, just a chance to run. They also actually suggested that he buy a charity entry to get into the race if he really wanted to run. What good would that do, as he'd be starting somewhere near the back?
I by no means am trying to knock the Houston Marathon. They have a great race and I know they will put on a top notch Olympic Trials in 2012, no doubt about it. But I do not understand why their elite field is so limited knowing that they are the trials host. Don't they figure many athletes may want to preview it? Also, they should want the most top notch field in the trials in 2012, but they are closing their race to potential athletes to get the time they need to compete.
If anyone has any serious insight to what is possibly going on here, please reply. I am very curious.
