AWESOME!
Wait, who? And people are supposed to care when someone wins a race by so much that it's obvious there was no competition, meaning that the event is of no consequence?
Oh well. AWESOME!!!
They should be more impressed. 1:09 on a fairly fast course without competition- PR. I'm impressed. Let’s see what happens over the next couple of years and at the Half worlds. I bet a couple minutes faster in her career.

AWESOME!
I saw the name "gebre" and assumed it was a dude. I was gonna say, 1:09 isn't terrible, but fast? Even Ryan Hall could have probably won that race. But that's fast for a chick, even one from Ethopia where most 17 year olds can do that with 7 weeks training.
Like I said, AWESOME!!!
is it really that fast? marathon WR = 2:15:x. Half of that = 1:07 high, two minutes faster. This would be the equivalent of a male running 1:03 high. Okay, even if you assume Paula's WR is an outlier and take the next-best 2:18s, it's still the same pace, making it equivalent to a male running a 62 - an ethiopean no less. either this isn't that fast, or female marathoning is DRASTICALLY uncompetitive.

Are you kidding me?! Lots and lots of guys running 1:03, but not so many 1:09 or faster women (ranked 51st in world this year). 1:09:44 for a woman = 1:00:44 man. Jen Rhines ran 1:12+ on this course in '06, so 1:09 really is impressive.
http://www.slsathletisme.com/Inscriptions/calc.php?lang=1Nice of her boyfriend to pace her as usual - see how many race results you can find where Gebre finishes more than 10 seconds away from her boyfriend Ezykas Sisay. And, he doesn't just happen to be the same ability as her - he has run 62-63. I'm not dismissing Gebre's talent, but people should look at the full picture. Her pacer/boyfriend deserves his share of the credit (even though it is illegal).
Douglas, have you ever been physically intimate with an Ethiopian woman?
Looks like he was registered (in results), so not illegal. She might have a harder time when she goes to the marathon (with women's head start, no male pacemakers). But she'll probably continue to run soft money races, even the marathon, with no female competition and no drug testing.
bull shit comment below. If you know anything from B gebre she ran peachtree, utica, cherryblossom which were all drug tested. She also ran crazy 8 and won that race in 25 minutes.Outside of Shalane Flanagan and Kara Goucher.. she may be the best runner that trains on US soil.I think she will become a US citizen soon.. and i think she could be one of the top runners in the country. There is another ethiopian runner in New York that is also really good... 2:27 in a recent marathon. If these guys get the support of USATF they will contribute to the team One last note.. i think Gebre will be very strong in the marathon. She is strong in cross country. Look forward to see her run for USA

I agree - Gebre does not duck competition or drug testing. She is a very tough athlete. The pacing from her, boyfriend, however, does tarnish her reputation.
Gebre will run Houston Marathon as her debut. Lets talk after that race... I think she is a very promising athlete. I have heard a lot of good things about her.
She was 4th in the world junior - and i think she ran 31:20's for road 10k this year.
She trains in Flagstaff AZ which has helped her improve.
Nice try! 0/10

Would you care to elaborate? Better yet... do you have the ability to?
You're just showing that you are not someone familiar with women's running.
Do yourself a favor and look at the results OR speak to the managers for any of the top female road racers.

Kim Smith is much better.

I stand my position. It's only been the past year she's ventured into more competitive, drug-testing races
http://www.athlinks.com/searchbeta.aspx?term=belainesh%20gebre). Seeing what was going on in Albuquerque and their system of doping, I wouldn't put it past anyone who's blatantly racing for easy money (pace maker in tote). Has she even been drug tested outside of races? If she got US citizenship now, USATF requires you to wait a period before competing in US Championship events.
well, i'd call it 10/10, b/c thats exactly what he did. I watched him in the race and he went out with the leaders, looking like he was competing, then quickly dropped off within 2 miles and started drifting back, then suddenly quit driftin back when his gf caught him. happens all the time though so none of us were surprised. I know the race directors don't like it though.
