I was a walk on my freshman year at a top 30 school (I'm a female distance runner, so top 30 school for women). Walk ons had to run the home course in a certain time, and I tried out in August but didn't make the team (despite putting in lots of miles over the summer... let's just say I'm not the most talented runner out there). I trained for a few more months and made the team in December in time for track season.
But I consider myself lucky because my coach let me try out again... but I was very lucky because my teammates were great. I would actually see the team practicing sometimes when I did my runs through the fall by myself, and every time I would run past them, they would cheer for me... and if I ever saw individual members of the team, they would always stop and say hi, ask me how my training was going, etc. After I made the team I was still respected just as any other member (despite being a walk on) and improved a lot in my years there.
Looking back, I realize how lucky I was because my cousin tried to walk on at his school and apparently the team was cold to him, etc.
So walk ons, what were your experiences?
