has me thinking and wondering which is best, training with a group slightly above/below/equal to your ability or training solo?

Slightly above your ability.

All three, in measured doses. Faster for the days/workouts you want to push. Slower on the true recovery days, to force you to slow down. And solo for some sanity / getting in touch with your body / and the wonderfulness that those solo runs can often provide.
I do this in my own running life with training partners of different ability levels. I've found that I overdo it if I'm trying to run with the "faster kids" too frequently, but it can be really valuable at times.
Solo training makes you tough
He's managing himself and will train with different groups as the situation arise mostly in So Cal where there are plenty of Oly, WC, & Majors medalists already.
I can see where training solo might toughen you up mentally, but I prefer to train in a group setting.
