He followed the 3 point dopers BS rule

1) Take PED. Look for something that leaves the body quick & trust to luck the odds are in your favour

2) Look up where the PED is used in something else like a cold or whatever

IMO, he thought he would get a lighter ban if he said he was not training when he tested positive, thereby gaining no performance benefit from the illegal drugs in his system, and so threw it out there hoping the panel wouldn't cop that NO PROFESSIONAL ATHLETE OF HIS CALIBRE WOULD BE TAKING THREE FREAKIN MONTHS OFF WITH ZERO TRAINING AT ALL. His excuse may explain the presence of the drug in his system, but I think Mr Merritt was telling a few fibs to get a lighter ban, the cheating chancer.

Now if he took 6 weeks off at the end of Olympic year, why did that apparently double last year? I'm not sayin he's lying about the supplement (though i have my doubts), but that he's lying about the fact that he wasn't training, AT ALL, three months after his last race of the season. Is that common among world class sprinters? Considering Merritt usually did some indoor races in January/february, I find it hard to believe.

In between seasons I always took about 2 weeks off with no activity, basically being a couch potatoe; then for several weeks I would start getting active doing various things like traveling, other sports and casual running and lifting. Although it was only about 2 weeks of complete down time, I would always say I took 2 months off between seasons. - Perhaps it is semantics.

The arbitrators truly believed Merritt was using ExtenZe and even made the argument USADA believed it. Merritt got a 7-11 clerk to testify on his behalf.

USADA did also point to a performance enhancing supplement that has similar ingredients. The decision however does not go into much detail on that argument.

And a smart doper would know of an over the counter product that had similar ingredients to what he was busted for but the arbitrators did believe Merritt.
