There is a reasonable chance we could do something we haven't done since '85: Have a U.S. runner world-rank in the 800, 1500, 5,000 and 10,000 in the same year. Potential rankers by event:
800 (Wheating, Symmonds)
1,500 (Wheating, maybe someone else)
5,000 (Solinsky and Lagat)
10,000 (Solinsky, and maybe Rupp)
I did a quick check as to when the last time was that the U.S. world-ranked in all four of those events in the same year, but first a disclaimer. T&FN doesn't have their world rankings archived from 2003-2009 online, but I think it's safe to presume that it didn't happen in those years.
The last time I could find that U.S. had world rankers in all four of those events was 1985, which was one helluva year. The rankers that year were:
* 800 (Gray #2, Jones #8),
* 1500 (Maree #3, Scott #7),
* 5,000 (Padilla #2, Maree #3, Bickford #10)
* 10,000 (Bickford #1, Nenow #3)
That's more total guys (total of six world rankers in one year in those four events, with two guys, Maree and Bickford, ranking in two events) than we might have this year but it's still possible that we'll have rankers in all four events for the first time in 25(!) years. Americans ranked #2, #3, #2 and #1 in each event, respectively, in "85. Incredible to think about, given the 25 years since then.
For those young 'uns that always heard us old-timers talk nostalgically about back in the day (referring to the late 70s through mid 80s), now you have a taste of what we were talking about.
It's fun, isn't it?
