Albert Pujols Triple Crown?

This could definitely happen. Actually, Votto still has a shot at it, too, though he would obviously have to have a big next 6 weeks. Votto leads the league in average, 7 behind in RBI's, and 4 back in home runs. If he gets hot or Pujols slows down a touch, it is not out of the question.

This seems to be a bit of an underplayed story. 1 guy with a very good shot at the Triple Crown and another one with a chance? I am enjoying following it.

These two are easily 1-2 for NL MVP in my opinion (edge to Votto right now since their numbers are nearly identical but the Reds are pulling away a bit).

Agree on Votto with the edge but if Pujols were to win the TC, he'd be MVP by default. But also, don't look past Roy Halladay for MVP. He shouldn't get the Cy, but he's been the only consistent non-injured player for the WC leading Phillies all year. He deserves recognition for MVP as well.

Good point. Halladay has been consistently great all year. He definitely deserves some MVP votes. And you're right, if Pujols ends up winning the Triple Crown, he would have to edge back ahead of Votto.

I think Adam Wainwright should be in the mention for the cy young as well as MVP.

By triple crown do you mean HGH, Steroids, and Amphetamines?

Pujol's average right now is below what he historically hits. He's been capable of being a .330 man. So raising that should be doable.

TC is tough though. The very fact that a hitter is that great tends to motivate pitchers to pitch around him. For a TC to happen you have to be in that zone of great, but not ridiculously great. And having good bats around you in the lineup helps a lot too.

Buster Olney says Wainwright for Cy Young 1, Hudson 2, Halladay 3. So that doesn't say deadheat to me.

Then again, I have to say that Wain-o and Halladay are a pretty even. Wainwright is close to Triple crown, leading ERA and Wins, 3rd in Ks, while Halladay leads in Ks, and is very close in Wins and ERA.

Halladay has the perfect game too. It might come down to which team makes the playoffs, though that is more important for MVP.

Triple Crown is more common in pitching too as Randy Johnson had one some time ago.

This happened to Ted Williams and Joe DiMaggio in 1941 (or thereabouts, sometime way before I was born) and Joe DiMaggio won MVP. I wonder if times are still the same.

wainwright is better in wins, loses and ERA and everyone knows that philly should be winning their division, but are underperforming.

It was 1942 when Williams won the Triple Crown and finished 2nd in MVP voting, but Joe Gordon won the MVP.

Ted Williams had one of the greatest hitting seasons of all time in 1941 when he finished 2nd to DiMaggio: .406/.553/.735 to go with 37 HR, 120 RBI (4th in RBIs and 1st in the other 2 categories), OPS of 1.287 and OPS+ of 235 (highest since 1884 outside of Bonds and Ruth).

Just looked it up. I was referred to 1947. Triple Crown, 2nd to DiMaggio in MVP voting. '41 is when he batted .406 and DiMaggio had the 56 game hit streak and won MVP over TW.[quote]asge wrote:

Phillies have struggled with injuries to Utley, Howard, and Rollins this year. Halladay has been their only consistent performer, and they are still in post season contention. That's why I say Halladay for MVP, not Cy though. Right now the Cy Young goes to Wainwright because he has the best stats, and he should have won it last year as well. The Phillies shouldn't be leading their division either. Braves have the third best record in baseball and deserve some credit. All this is coming from a Mets fan, for perspective.

I still disagree. Look at the stats between Halladay and Wainwright.

Before last night Halladay was also 1st in MLB in K. Halladay's Run Support is almost identical to Greinke's from last season too. It is tight, one bad game from either could dramatically alter the choice.
