No way. If you are an educated track fan, you can easily tell who is leading a 400m hurdles event. Who jumps first? That's the runner in the lead.
It can often be difficult to tell who is leading a flat 400m, but you can get a very good idea on the back stretch by comparing distances between athletes. Some close that gap early, some close that gap late. I would like to see some exhibition 400m races with a 1-turn stagger. That would be exciting. However, indoors is run with a 1-lap stagger and the 2nd half is run free-for-all.
