A local authority in Israel has announced that it is establishing a special team of youth counsellors and psychologists whose job it will be to identify young Jewish women who are dating Arab men and "rescue" them.

The move by the municipality of Petah Tikva, a city close to Tel Aviv, is the latest in a series of separate -- and little discussed -- initiatives from official bodies, rabbis, private organizations and groups of Israeli residents to try to prevent interracial dating and marriage.

In a related development, the Israeli media reported this month that residents of Pisgat Zeev, a large Jewish settlement in the midst of Palestinian neighborhoods in East Jerusalem, had formed a vigilante-style patrol to stop Arab men from mixing with local Jewish girls.

One of the few polls on the subject, in 2007, found that more than half of Israeli Jews believed intermarriage should be equated with "national treason."

Since the state's founding in 1948, analysts have noted, a series of legal and administrative measures have been taken by Israel to limit the possibilities of close links developing between Jewish and Arab citizens, the latter comprising a fifth of the population.

Largely segregated communities and separate education systems mean that there are few opportunities for young Arabs and Jews to become familiarized with each other. Even in the handful of "mixed cities," Arab residents are usually confined to separate neighborhoods.

In addition, civil marriage is banned in Israel, meaning that in the small number of cases where Jews and Arabs want to wed, they can do so only by leaving the country for a ceremony abroad. The marriage is recognized on the couple's return.

COTABATO CITY: A military spokesman of the 6th Infantry Division of the Philippine Army based in Camp Siongco, Awang, Maguindanao reacted sharply to the allegation of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) that Army soldiers burned civilian houses and fired air strikes indiscriminately in Maguindanao hitting their own troops.

Col. Jonathan Ponce, spokesman of the Army’s 6th Infantry Division told The Manila Times that the Army is always observing the rules of engagement and always following the laws of armed conflict. “That is a mere propaganda on the part of the MILF,” Ponce emphasized.

An MILF source was earlier quoted having said that the military concentrated its relentless and indiscriminate artillery bombardment in areas that included civilian communities in the towns of Datu Unsay, Datu Saudi, Shariff Aguak, Mamasapano, Rajah Buayan, Datu Piang, Guindulungan and Talayan.

The MILF had also accused the military of burning civilian houses in the towns of Shariff Aguak, Mamasapano and Datu Saudi. “As I have said this reported burning of civilian houses attributed to the military is not only mere propaganda of the MILF but also devoid of truth,” the Army’s 6th ID spokesman said.

Meanwhile, according to Ponce, the Army’s Special Forces Company of the Southern Command was able to recover on Thursday a motorboat with two persons onboard in the vicinity of Barangay Salimbao in the town of SultanKudarat, Maguindanao. He said the Army has now in its custody the two persons onboard the motorboat identified as Hamiruddin Makapilin, 21 years old and Amil Tanaop, 20 years old and both residing in Barangay Kapinpilan in Sultan Kudarat town.

Ponce said the two are now undergoing tactical interrogation after the Army found in their possession an M-16 Armalite rifles with 20 rounds of live ammunitions.

Likewise, Ponce also said that operating troops belonging to the 46th Infantry Battalion were able to recover two M203 Grenade Launchers from two abandoned huts identified to be an MILF satellite camp in Barangay Muslim, Guindulungan, Maguindanao on Thursday.

He said besides these two high-powered firearms, the 46th Infantry Battalion was also able to recover one banca and various MILF secret documents.

In a related development, the Army’s 38th Infantry Battalion also arrested 19-year-old Mohaimen Alimpang, a resident of Barira, Maguindanao for carrying unlicensed M-16 Armalite rifle with one long magazine and 10 short magazines during a routine patrol in Barangay Ramidas in the town of Buldon, Maguindanao, according to Ponce.
