i dont think salazar should ever joke about injecting hormones into his athletes' bodies.
He was referring to people getting pregnant, and Salazar still gives people the benefit of the doubt of understanding context. To me this just shows that he has nothing to hide if he can honestly joke like that and not think, "oops, what if they think I mean for performance enhancement."
A couple thoughts:
1) Why are people so negative? People tearing down Alan and the writer?
What I got was, hey, here is someone covering a runner (well a couple runners) and a coach. Giving fans some insight as to what is going on with two of our best runners, when we often hear complaints that there is not enough insight/info as to what our best runners are doing.
2) If Alan is getting ready for a 1500 in 2 weeks and Salazar thinks he may be in 3:36/3:37 shape and he can't hang with Rupp in the speed work yet, Rupp is in pretty good shape now. Likely 3:35 or better and that bodes well for his upcoming 5000 & 3000 meter races based on his ability to run a 27 min. 10000.
3) As Alan progresses in these workouts and enjoys the rythym that he hasn't had for ages, and if he's actually improved on his mechanics he's going to feel even better, then he is going to start really enjoying what he's doing. The renewed confidence could turn into momentum (think Wheating) and he may have a nice series of races before the summer is over. It wouldn't totally suprise me if Alan pops around 3:32 by the end of season if his health continues.
4) Salazar doesn't skip anything. He doesn't wing it. He takes coaching as a profession in every aspect. For those who often ask what it is he knows that many (not all because a few others do) don't know, it's called the whole package, without ever cutting a single corner.
Anyway good luck Webb and Rupp!
Let’s back up a little, to early 2008. Webb was training well, in good shape and in position to make a run at a medal in Beijing. Then he contracted food poisoning before a road race in the spring.
“I finished, but I stopped in the middle of the race,” Webb says.
Did anyone else catch this? Was that the year he DNF'd at Carlsbad? I'm too lazy to do my homework on this but is that an outright lie?
And I don't care what kind of shape anyone says he is in until he races. Either way, I do hope he runs fast.

LetsRun.com Recap: Jorge Torres, Shalane Flanagan Win 8k Titles in New York

Jorge Torres Gets the US 8k Title In the men's race, Jorge Torres pushed away from Andrew Carlson over the final half mile, although Carlson stayed close, as Jorge got the win by less than a second. Pre-race favorite Alan Webb, led at 5k, then soon after stopped, tried to regain his form, but could not and finished 16th. Webb was suffering from the lingering effects of food poisoning he picked up at the pre race press conference on Thursday
Not Carlsbad.
I don't remember for sure, but didn't he have some crappy performance at a road 8k or something similar a few weeks before Carlsbad? Like everyone was hyping him to win and set a CR, and he jogs it in in like 15th place or something?
And then came Carlsbad, where he DNF'd and things got even worse and kept going downhill. Though to be fair, he did finish all his races after that, he just suddenly became a 1:48/3:39/3:57 guy...
That's how I remember it, but I can't remember what race it was, so I'm not sure....
They are not running a men's 1500 in London on Aug. 14. It's a men's mile, and Webb is not on the current entry list.

So, he is one of the trolls here on letsrun. A troll managed to get something published. Amazing stuff.
is that a fact? wrote:

Doubtfull that Webb's first race back would be a diamond league race - there is probably some low key 1500 somewhere that he'll use as a rust buster. And we will wake up early or stay up late waiting for it.

...and be pissed when it's a hoax!!

Huh? I don't think training hard was every his problem. He had a few down years. I won't be surprised at all when he comes back much faster than ever.
I think training hard consistently was indeed his problem. He left Michigan prematurely, he had that weird 5km where he just jogged it in. He had some crummy 1500s for no apparent reason.
I don't mean he doesn't have the work ethic to run a hard "Michigan" now and then, I mean he may not have the will power to stick with the daily grind of training when he is not on top of the world.

Yep.
Why would I believe Webb when he says he is running?
Webb still has to get by Wheating, Manzano, Lomong, Lagat, Acosta and a few other Americans. I'll pay attention to what time he runs, but i'm more curious to see if he can run with those guys.
if real: 3:40.6
if hoax: 3:29.8
The first race wasn't a Hoax, he never declared he was running it. If anything he claimed he would be there.
His name is in the start lists for the race already.
I thought the article was surprisingly insightful into the mind of Salazer. No lie.
