Far be it for me to pass comment on Wheating's 800 - but does anyone else think perhaps he made a mistake running so wide between 180 to go and 100 to go.
Could he not have tucked in and then swung out when the hit the home straight - and ran 5 to 10 metres less - and been a bit closer to 1.44.
It's hard to say. Once you start your kick, if you're all in, it's difficult to change gears.
Was that Lisa Koll finishing in like 14:42?!

agree, but the kid is still inexperienced, olympian, ncaa champion and all. he'll learn.
Who was Wheating running for? Nike, I presume?

I'm over 6 foot but not near 6'5" like Wheating. I don't think some of you appreciate how difficult it is to race from the back of a world class 800 as at 6'5". If you are inside and have to do a half step to make an adustment to get out, that's a big momentum stopping half step for a guy like Wheating. Stopping momentum at that pace is unforgiving.
His best option is to run wide, accept that he'll always be running a longer race and just take it as a bonus when he can spend more time in lane one on the turns.
He'll get better, but he'll always have to stay wide. Hopefully he'll hone his instincts on when to move though since he has often been forced super wide coming into the homestretch (olympic trials and the paris race in particular).
It sucks for him but that is why the 1500 will likely be a better race.
