Baltes could possibly be one of the very few who could do it.

I don't think Brandon and U of M brass will give an outsider like Baltes a chance. Fred Laplante will get it
This is still a Big 10 job.
They have the 2nd most talent (as usual in Big 10) behind only Wisconsin.
Who has jerry baltes coached that could even be in the top 10 on UM'd distance roster.
It will be Mort and I think he did a flat lousy job at kentucky (especially men's side of things) but at least he was a good runner himself.
Take of your rose tinted D1 specs and look at the real facts. UM's top 10?? Some of their top guys were bringing up the rear at Stanford 14.40+ or DNF
Baltes working with guys at GVSU who wouldnt have got a sniff for UM etc in highschool had his top guy at 29.37 another at 30.07 and 3 guys sub 14.38 without a single foreign stud or high school star in his stable.
14:38 wouldnt place you in the top 30 in the Big 10.
Wouldn't even get to run in the seeded section at indoors conference.
Actually, 14:38 would have placed 29th at Big Tens this year.
remember peck? baltes is good at taking blue collar runners and making them successful, not necessarily taking a wad of talent and making them Olympians. different style. he'll continue to do well at GV and U of M won't bring in an outsider that's for sure. Brannan and willis are still racing too much to coach, but sully? he's your man.
I wasn't saying 14.38 was great I was just pointing out that Baltes had 3 guys who would have beaten the majority of the UofM team this year and no doubt with much slower high school pr's.
CMU wanted Baltes but it would have been a pay cut and he probably would have had less scholarships to work with. Baltes isn't leaving to go anywhere, because he wants to continue to dominate and won't get this setup anywhere else

JB, I didn't write this I swear. But I suspect there's a lot of truth in it, haha.
UM should've gone after Brian Kelly in football and they didn't. If they do hire an outsider for men's cross, hopefully it's not some sleazy dude like RichRod!

Dominate what exactly?
the gliac and top 10 national finishes year after year.
Congrats. That must be exciting.
almost as exciting as working at a giant big-10 program and never winning anything of consequence.
its great to dominate baby nationals when you are at a school with 20,000+ students to chose from on top of great facilities and support from the athletic department. not that michigan would ever consider him, but he'd be in over his head and would be a major downgrade from warhurst.

running is black and white..gvsu takes decent hs runners and they come out studs, I believe that is caused by good coaching........just ask alan webb
baltes's style coaching would never work at a school like michigan which has limited roster size. he takes 40-50 guys, runs them into the dirt and who ever is left not hurt races. if he did that at U of M he wouldn't have enough people left to run at the end of the season. for the sake of michigan's athlete's i hope he isn't even a consideration for the position.
Since UofM WILL NEVER hire him, why don't we talk about who might actually get the job or why there is a huge cover up here when Ron CLEARLY got forced out?!!!!
