Could Wheating end 2010 as one of the best 800-1500/mile runners in the World???

Also, I meant this as a discussion for now and something we can try to finalize when the summer season is over.

Centro and Acosta are not anywhere in the same league as Wheating in the 800. This is not their fault, but this is the case with most.

None of the top American milers are as fast as Wheating at 800 and none of the top American 800 guys are as fast at the 1500/mile.

In fact, he's really approaching world class in both events. As the OP stated, not many guys in the world currently can do that.

ummm Lomong also has run 1:45 and finished third in NCAA cross. He currently outranges Wheating. Wheating only beat him because he ran a more conservative race, whereas,Lomong was more ambitious. We have yet to see Wheating truly sack up in a race. This could be a blessing or a curse. Maybe he can't mix in with the big boys and he hangs back for a reason. We have so many tales of him coming from way back, but his kick rarely results in wins, so whats the point in boasting about it.

All the posts on this board are wheating wheatting wheating. Everyone forgets Acosta let him win NCAA's and ran less than a couple seconds faster in a B RACE. Wheating isn't much better than Acosta IF ANY BETTER. (he would not have run 3:51 in that race. And you think he is ready for the American record....peaaallllleaaassee

Is a world class field, multiple pace setters, faster splits worth 1.8 seconds. Yes, and probably more.

I kind of agree with that poster. The only time his kick reallly and truly rallied him to a meaningful victory was the past years NCAA 800 against Andrews. Other than that he has never stole "winning glory" from anybody of great significance. Countless times running second fiddle to Hernandez and Symmonds but domonstating a strong finish. The thruth is I think both Manzano and Lomong could still beat him in a US championship race. If Webby ever makes a comeback I don't think he will even make the team in the 1500. And I think Symmonds could crush him under his thumb in an 800. He not really a winner, never mind him beating frshman 800 runners, Symmonds for example sacked up and stuck it to friggin Borzi. Who's Wheating beaten....Andrews???? He needs to take some real skulls before I agree about his bright future.

Then again not being a winner sometimes isn't such a bad thing. Look at Webbie who tries to break championship fields on the second lap trying to WIN and ends up last. Nick Willis on the other hand doesn't have a single golden league victory to his name and runs for place NOT the win and he is the one who ends up with a medal. The moral of the story is that the better runner doesn't always win the prize, sometimes being smart enough to play it safe pays huge dividends. Wheating seems to be that kind of guy.

I believe wheating has won well over half of the races he has entered this year including the NCAA double plus a couple of 3:37 races, one over Leer.

If that seems like a rare amount of victories then OK.

In the world as an 800m runner....no way. Wheating is by far a better 1500/mile runner.

I guess I should have made it more clear since several people have commented quite a bit off my point.

What I mean is as one of the best 800 AND 1500/mile runners in the world.

Then Cruz and Seb Coe. Those types. Guys who end up with some of best marks in the U.S. (or world) in both the 800 AND 1500/mile.

I kind of expected by now there would be more discussion of guys domestically or internationally who could challenge him or are better at BOTH distances.

Obviously there are some, I'm not saying he is the best. Just that he appears to be rising up as one of the best. And I am assuming that he's going to have a big PR at 800.

His 1:45.0 seemed to have a lot of running left and that was done long after his NCAA 800 which he peaked for. I'm certainly of the belief that with his 800 domination at pac-10s, regionals and ncaa's this year he is much faster now in an 800 race that really strings him out. Say something that is won in 1:42 or 1:43low.

As for the guy who said Wheating doesn't win much. Wheating has to be 8-9/10 on winning at the 800/1500/mile over since the start of his 2008 outdoor season and that includes indoor races, ncaa championships and the olympic trials and olympics.

Actually he has rarely lost and when he has it's been by a fraction. Indoors is always going to be tougher for him, but we are not talking indoors anyway. At the 1500/mile the only race he lost was the Pac-10 race last year and yes he did come to late since it was a sit and kick and both Rupp and Centro ran :52low and had a jump on wheating going into the last lap. Wheating also had an 800 an hour or two later which is why he held back as much as he could in the 1500, and he managed to win the 800.

You can look back at his results over the past few years but he has raced a lot of quality fields featuring post collegiate and the top collegiate runners and come out on top.

Theres your list of athletes!

So at a quick glance (though that does not include the mile) a couple big heavyweights are Asbel Kiprop and Laalou.

Be interesting to see how fast they end the year with, but they've each had 3-4 races on the diamond league already this season.

Both are 1:43mid-high right now and 3:32 and 3:34 for 1500 which is pretty close to what they ran at PRE for their mile equivalents (3:32 and 3:33?).

Wheating has yet to run an international 800 this year but my thought is he's going to pop at least 1:44mid but I wouldn't be all that surprised if he skips 1:44 if he gets into one of the great 800's like we've already seen this year. Anyway the 800 is yet to be determined.

His 1500 is now 3:34.

He is talking about beating world class competition, not 19 year olds. 2 years ago he made the Olympic team and instead of spending the next few years trying to mix it up with the worlds best, he was racing college kids. He lost at least half the big NCAA open races he was in and out leaning guys like the guy from USC at Pac 10s, and Everett at NCAAs. Those guys are hardly world class.

I am excited to see what he does in Europe, but Wheating's defining race is one where he got 2nd and made the Olympic Team and I cant think of one stand-out performance of his that wasnt run at Hayward.

When is he scheduled to race again

First, there are 25 year olds in the NCAA and one of them is a 3:37 runner. Speaking of races outside of Eugene, Wheating handily beat him (running 3:37) while doubling at Regionals a month or so back.

As far as international races, well he just finished at college.

He's run in 4 outdoor NCAA champships and is 3/4 on victories. The one he lost was by .001 and it was his breakout year.

I understand people are looking for data to put this guy back to just another top level NCAA guy, the type that come around every year, but the evidence is against you. Perhaps you spend too much time looking at data instead of actually witnessing the races.

The fact that you couldn't come up with any more world class 800/1500 guys other than the 2 already mentioned says a lot about wheatings ability.---
