I was looking around a running store the other day for some cheap shorts. All of the nice shorts were priced at $40, and the "cheap" shorts were 30+! That's way more than I pay even for normal shorts, and these are just some nylon sewn together.
What the hell happened? 5 years ago I bought all my shorts for ten bucks each.
Take an art class and become more creative...then, you can create a cheaper short. lol
Why do you need to wear shorts? Just wear a jock strap - shorts don't provide any support

I don't know the economics well enough to give the best answer, but I can assure you that much cheaper, and entirely decent, running shorts can be found.

Their shorts seem fine to me, and I'm recently reminded that Supplex (nylon) workout clothes (some of the shorts here) don't reek anywhere near as bad as polyester, which is what nearly everything is made from these days.
People seem to like Eastbay's cheap splits too, though I can't personally vouch for 'em. Check soark.com. I used to routinely find pretty good stuff (Nike, Brooks, etc) at my local Marshall's too.
I live near a Nike Clearance Store where split short sells for $12 and long sleeve sells for $14, even the $55 race day singlet sells for $9 and $100+ jacket sells for $14. They are CHEAP....
There are several bargains on Bill's site.
Try the outlet malls, they usually have decent price on shorts if you don't live near a Nike Clearance Store. I just got a pair of black Nike running shorts for 21.99. Beats the regular prize of 40 something.

You guys need Decathlon to open up in the USA. They are a French chain of outdoor superstores (with an aisle for every sport you can imagine), making top quality technical running shorts in any color you want for EUR 5.99 (about $7). Brand name is "Kalenji" so it makes you feel slightly more Kenyan ;-)
Perhaps the mistake is looking in a specialist running store?

Marshall's, TJ Maxx sometimes have running shorts for < $20. I got three pairs of Nike men's Tempos from Dick's for $19 each.
There's a store in my area called Rugged Warehouse and they usually have running shorts and other running stuff for really cheap but you have to check often because they only keep stuff for a month or two. It's good stuff (Nike, adidas).

Marathon Expos have really cheap, brand name shorts. Even if you are not running, its worthwhile to go the Expo for bargains.
