Guess they want to make sure he gets into the finals.
Robby Andrews has to work his arse off to get into the finals.

1) stop trying to invent controversies
2) even if andrews does have a harder road to the finals, I doubt it will amount to running an entire extra event...
Please post entries and point out the large discrepancy. At first glance, I didn't notice one.
Wheating is an Olympian, he should be in the final. Ensuring this will increase ticket sales.
I predict he will run casual and get outkicked in the Prelim. He will not make it to the Finals. He is very vulnerable right now.
Ohh, I see it now, Andrews has a wopping 3 x 1:46 guys (2 other than himself) and 5 x 1:47 guys where as Wheating on the extreme other hand has 2 X 1:46 guys (1 other than himself) and the huge luxury of 6 x 1:47 guys.
Completely outrageous. They should have pulled a 1:46 guy out of Andrews heat and allowed another 1:47 guy in his spot to make it ultra fair. The difference between 1:46 times from regional qualifying races is absolutely monumental!
And then you have heat 2 which has 4 x 1:46 guys and 4 x 1:49 guys. Shoot I don't even no what to think of that one, more fair or less fair. Boy I really don't know, must be some huge conspiracy to get Wheating through.

What race is this?
Average time in heat 1 = 1:47.21
Average time in heat 2 = 1:47.88
Average time in heat 3 - 1:47.43
Mean time in heat 1 (4th and 5th times/ 2) = 1:47.23
Mean time in heat 2 (4th and 5th times/ 2) = 1:47.39
Mean time in heat 3 (4th and 5th times/ 2) = 1:47.56
Andrews in heat 1, Oregons Greer in heat 2, Wheating in heat 3.
I don't think you could really get more even heats.
The great thing about 2/2/2 +2 semi-finals is that everyone knows, or should know, that the semi is everything. With a two heat semi, there's plenty of wiggle-room. With this format, none at all.
It is a formula that was decided before the meet.
1st place from each of the 6 qualifying heats was spread into the 3 semi's by time in a 1-2-3-3-2-1 sequence. Wheating is #2, Andrews is #4. Same process for 2nd, 3rd, and the q on time.
Wheatings heat is actually pretty fast, as Loxsom, Waite, Kitur, Gowell, and Foster have all gone 1:46.
This is true, you would want to race this like a final to make sure you are in. With as many 1:46 guys and low 1:47 guys as there are, both Wheating and Andrews do not want to snooze to long or they might not see the final. Breaking 1:47 in 3rd place may miss out.
Not ideal for Wheating's double hopes but you gotta do what you gotta do.
Wheating was competing in the 800m jog. Naturally, the times are a little slower.
800m gonna be good wrote:

So Wheatings heat actually has 6 x 1:46 guys in it???
yes, Foster and Gowell from 2009, and Kitur in 2008.
There are slowpokes running in the national championship 800?

These all mouth no brain posts drive me nuts.
Remember if you know the rules of the game you can understand the game.
Can you make a purdy chart for everyone's times? Remember, IAAF points and NOT Purdy points, and a categorical scale on the x-axis instead of a log scale.

I believe that is a question for Malmo.
Coming from a geometrical time scale it does definitely seem that Wheating has the weakest heat by far.
