This is an off shoot of the Mrs. M thread. I will be going up to Mount Desert Island in late July. I was wondering if anyone has an opinion on which campground may be better suited for tent camping?
Thanks!

I think this question hinges on what side of the island you want to stay on. Seawall is quite a ways from most of the main attractions. I've stayed at Blackwoods three times, and it is wonderful. I can't speak to how it is in the high season (when you're going), but it's great being able to walk to the cliffs and ocean from your campsite.
I would advise taking a good look at the park map to determine what you want to do, and then stay at the campground that is closer to those activities. Both campgrounds are well suited for tents.
pretty sure you will need a reservation for blackwoods in july. Seawall has first come sites.
blackwoods is much nearer to bar harbor and the more popular parts of the park. seawall is on the "quiet" side of the island.
Personally, i would stay near bar harbor. there are plenty of private campsites nearby. The Shuttle goes by them all.
Expect crowds, get out the door early for hiking and biking
I think you're better off at blackwoods, it's much closer to everything you're gonna wanna go to. you'll spend much less time driving.
Also from a runners persepctive there are many more possibilities for running on the blackwoods side, I was at Seawall for a 60 mile week a few years ago and spent way too much time looping around the camp ground.
Thanks much to everyone for the insight. Sounds like Blackwoods would be better for us as we will run and bike, and it would be nice to drive less.
Seawall had beautiful tent sites when I went in 2008. I would recommend it regardless of the distance to town. The morning runs out of there were fantastic. Have fun!
