Just looked up the research studies on compression socks and running. Only found two original peer-reviewed papers:
In one the conclusion was "Wearing graduated compression stockings (pressure at ankle 18 - 22 mmHg) during a 10-km road run appears to reduce delayed-onset muscle soreness after exercise in recreationally active men." Ali et al., J Sports Sci. 2007 Feb 15;25(4):413-9.
The other study Kemmler et al., concluded "stockings with constant compression in the area of the calf muscle significantly improved running performance at different metabolic thresholds(anaerobic and aerobic). However, the underlying mechanism was only partially explained by a slightly higher aerobic capacity." J Strength Cond Res. 2009 Jan;23(1):101-5.
As for brand, like shoes it will come down to personal taste.
