That is a great question. Is it exceptional for a runner to run a sub 60 considering the barriers and water jump? Malmo; what do most most national class and world class runners close in? (in the 8 min to 830 range).
Shaheen closed in 57 in the 2003 World Championships didn't he? Not 10% sure of the last lap but it was sub 60 and that was probably the best race I have ever seen, steeplechase or otherwise.
The fastest I know of is 58.13, by Bernard Barmasai when he ran a then world record of 7:55.74.
It's gotta depend on the exact distance of the last lap too, right, depending on the placement of the water jump?

Exactly^. Some have internal water jumps, some external.

that was my question, gotta elaborate if its inside the turn or outside. running a 58 450m is super impressive at the end of that race, running a 58 370m...not so much, but still impressive
I ran a 64 last 400 in a 853 race a few years ago and I put 20 meters on the 2nd place guy just in that last lap. It 'seemed' fast.
That's a pretty good time, I'm guessing you run the flat 3k in mid 8:10's to low 8:20's ?
dont know but... wrote:

I wouldn't have any idea. Lap times are meaningless in a steeplechase.
