Anyone know what happened to him or what he is doing?
Anyone know what happened to him or what he is doing?
Well, I saw that he ran a race unattached last year. He ran like 50+ or just under 50 for the 400m. Compared to his High-school career he had a very lack-luster collegiate career. I think he only qualified individually once and there he got DQed. If anyone has the real story I'd like to hear it too.
Don't understand it. The guy ran 1:46 in HS and never seemed to have gotten any faster once he got to UCLA. I thing his team won a rely or two, but that was it. Did he peak in HS, was he injured a lot, did he just not care once he was at UCLA or was there a coaching problem. I'm not one to try to run anyone's life, but it is always a shame when wasted talent goes useless.
Maybe, like Webb, he reached his physical peak in high school.
He is running for the nike farm team in Palo Alto, nikefarmteam.com, I think

Too much speed work in high school and he's done for good.
Too much speedwork in HS, but a bigger reason may be the long, grinding collegiate season. Give UCLA credit though, they did take a full 2 years to make him slower. If I had run 1:46 in HS, I'm not sure I would go anywhere that made me race indoor track or even more than 6 races outdoors. at 1:46 in HS, I'm not looking for an NCAA Championship appearance, I'm looking at my Olympic career.
Michael is doing well...( message to those who are generally concerned..NOT THE BASHERS...!!)Few of us can understand a progeny. We may try to BUT we can't seem to walk in their shoes...they just don't fit...!!Imagine looking in a mirror, the face you see in the mirror has only been seen by YOU...for NO ONE ELSE has EVER run that fast in HS...SCARY thoughts.!!Thoughts AW sleeps with every night...on a lighter note...does he go out for Trick or Treat??He could always dress up like 'El G' for a night..lol
Well, it's sad and hard to understand, by this point, why there wasn't some change, like him transfering or something where he could have created or had created for him more opportunity to improve. If it wasn't working after two years, why not back off and start over fresh?
Agreed, though, one can't know unless one is in those shoes.
granville was a prodigy. i guess he was also progeny. anyway, what's with you idiots? you think you all know so much about what led to his "downfall" and you know absolutely NOTHING!!!! too much speedwork? gimme a break, it's an 800. you people are PATHETIC. i can't believe there's a link to this stupid thread on the front page.

So who would win in a race (800m) right now, Obea Moore or Granville?
yes - too much anaerobic interval work - hard to believe yes, but even inthe 800 the primary operating system behind performance is aerobic power a.k.a. Snell - only a 48.2 open 400 guy but with 120 weeks behind him 1:45.31 - even the East African men / women running events of 800/1,500 realize that if you base training primarily on the anaerobic (even for the 800) - your career will be shortlived - especially in the key development years - Long Live Lydiard!!
Forget the training, I think it's from no longer being under the influence of his dad. I read that his dad coached him, and coached him hard. This is a common phenomenon with kids who are parent-coached to the top. Often it's called burnout. Once they're grown ups, they decide that there's more to life than running. Todd Marinovich, the football player, is another example.
Please let me know if I'm allwrong on the coaching history.
Too much high-end training, especially during adolesence, will destroy the athlete, physiologically. Granville is a prime example of this. Not bashing on him, just calling a spade a spade.
This is kind of interesting. Lets look at two cases...
Michael Granville
Alan Webb
Michael, HS phenom
Alan, HS Phenom
Michael, mid d runner
Webb, mid d runner
Michael, physically mature in hs
Alan, physically mature in hs
Michael, goes to college, runs slightly worse than senior yr of hs
Alan, goes to cllege, runs slightly worse than senior year of hs
Michael, continues grinding it out, getting slower
Alan, leaves college, gets fat contract, and goes back to what always worked.
Had Granville "gone pro" after high school, I wonder if people would have called him a fool? I wonder what they would say after seeing how hos career progressed. I commend Alan for having the foresight to stick with what got him to 3:53. Michael should have stayed with what got him to 1:46 (if trying to maximize his athletic potential)
It wouldn't have mattered what Granville did after high school -- the damage was done.
Additionaly, Webb was a much better runner than Granville ever was. Furthermore, Webb ran great during his Michigan XC season, doubling back on his HS 5k time, and was still able to run 3:41 after 2 months down due to injury.
Why shouldn't a 1:46 800m runner be well under 4 minutes at one mile?
Granville's Stamina
1:46.5/46.5 = 2.290
by comparison
Webb's Stamina
1:47.5/47.8 = 2.248
Hall's Stamina
1:51.2/50.5 = 2.201
Conto, interesting comparison. We'll see...
As a midwesterner, I most of my information on West Coast athletes is read or rumor. I read that Granville's dad based all his training in high school to help him excel in the 1500 in college. I kept waiting for his debut in a 1500, but never saw that it took place. I was eagerly anticipating this as a :47/1:46 guy training for 1500 has the potential to light the longer distance up. Can anyone who knows anything comment? If all you know is rumor or guessing, save the space for someone who can actually comment factually on my observations. Thanks!
Hey first were did you get that info? and second who would be considered abiger bust so to speak, Obea Moore or Granville.
Parker Valby post 5k interview... Worst of all time? Are Parker Valby interviews always cringe?
MSU men > NAU by 1 point even though Nico Young and Colin Sahlman tripled!!
