I'm a geezer now in my late forties, but did run some competitive 800M times back in my high school days at OFSAA. At 18-19 1:52 high would pretty much result in winning most high-level Canadian high-school races - Hard for me to imagine running 1:46 as a 19 year old, as Gregson has just done!

The U.S. HS record is 1:46 (18-year old), and I believe Nate Brannen ran 1:46 as an 18-year old HSer. 3:35 is better, of course, and compares with Webb running about the equivalent: 3:53 for the mile at 18.
What 800M time would he need to run for it to compare equally to his 3:35 1500M?
1:46 and 3:35 are both excellent times for a 19 year old. Yes, Granville, Brannen, and Webb ran faster at 18 but I can't think of too many other non-Africans in that class.
Of course the Africans are significantly faster - 1:42.69 and 3:30.24 are the World Junior records - but 1:46 and 3:35 at least earns you the right to step onto the track with those guys, especially if it's a juniors only race.

Gabe Jennings ran 1:46.99 as a 19 year old, so he's doing better than that.
jim ryun ran 1:44.3 as a junior.
I would say it is a really good time but it has been done several times before. I believe Jeremy Johnson as a freshmen at Texas Tech and Mark Sylvester as a freshmen at Tennesse, both in 2002. They were both right around 1:45 high/1:46 low.
also jose parilla ran 1:45.34 as a junior, as a 19 year old freshman at tennesse.
i am surprised people on a running site would forget that jim ryun ran 1:44.3 for 800 and 3:51.3 for the mile as a junior.
i mean jim ryun is american with those times how can runners on a website of mostly americans forget about him.

No RYUN ran these times as a 19 year JR in 1966....I just went over the Jim Ryun story book and it does not have all the exact dates(it's in front of me as I type this)He beat Keino in the 2mile in 8:25, runs 3:53.7 missing the WR by a 10th of second (Jazy SP? 3:53.6 at the time), runs WR at 880 yars at Terre Haute 1:44.9(53.3 and closes 51.6) and sets a WR at Berkeley in the mile 3:51.3 all as a 19 year FRESHMAN, not a sophmore....he graduated in 1965 from HS.....in 1966 he was a FRESHMAN at Kansas...........JAYHAWK read the Jim Ryun story and you will not make a fool of yourself again................So 1:46 is good. Remember High Schooler Michael Granville set the HS record in a prelim by himself, 1:46.45 and he was 18-years-old.
