WHAT IS GOING ON HERE?
WHAT IS GOING ON HERE?
Those don't look like Nike shoes to me.
I'm shocked by this
dibaba in Nike gear:
http://www.scotsman.com/sport/Twell-finds-form-but-Dibaba.5969564.jp
i had a theory that Nike wouldn't sponsor Dibaba. but i guess i was wrong.
If there was ever a story worthy of all caps, this is it.
I think you mean Dibaba.
Twell sucks
I think you will find that Nike was one of the Bupa Great Edinburgh International X Country event sponsors and that's where those Nike vests came from.

Does anyone seriously think that Nike would let a contracted athlete run in Mizuno shoes?
3/10 for the OP because you got some replies from people that actually thought she had switched to Nike.

Yes, because it would have been the first time she had ever been handed her new kit and who would want her competing in shoes she had never worn in her life?

This should be the authority:
http://www.globalathletics.com/Athletes/tirunesh_dibaba.phpIt should be...seems like Mizuno haven't got the message yet.
Not to mention her own site...
http://www.tiruneshdibaba.net/Sponsors/SponsorsManager.php?sponsors
What's more likely:
Elshadai Negash has yet to update the website he maintains and Mizuno has yet to update their website
or
Her management firm, the ones who negotiate kit contracts and arrange competitions on her behalf, updated her profile from Mizuno to Nike erroneously?

This is still up even though Felix is now with Nike:
http://www.press.adidas.com/desktopdefault.aspx/tabid-359/Not everything is updated so quickly, especially when a sponsorship has existed for years.
When did Felix switch to Nike?
Her own website has her with adidas.

There is absolutely no way that being an event sponsor would allow you the right to tell the athletes to wear your racing kit. Look at the photo posted above, there is a runner in adidas kit.
Since Mark Wetmore is her agent, I can see a lot of inconsistencies.... He is a lawyer by trade.

Actually at some track meets you'll see athletes wearing a different short then their top or different kit then their shoes due to the details of the meet. It's late so I don't feel like looking up pics for you guys but if you've ever seen athletes wear contrasting brands then that is usually why. Also the "racing in new shoes at big race" theory seems legit as well. Either way I would be very surprised if Nike picked up Dibaba.

I would be interested to see as that would be clear grounds for the sponsor to void the athlete's contract. The only written exception to wearing a sponsor's uniform is when competing on a national team at the Olympics, World Championships or similar event.
Sponsors will give a bit of leeway in getting adjusted to the new footwear. Notice Felix Sanchez in his brand new adidas uniform but still wearing his Nike spikes:
http://www.photorun.net/images_L/2009/TF/Carson_Track_Classic/Sanchez_Felix-Carson09.JPGI don't know why anyone here would be surprised that Nike would want to have Dibaba wearing their gear. She's a proven champion and most likely successor to cousin Derartu Tulu and Paula Radcliffe as the dominant road racer in the world. More than anyone else, she has the potential to break Radcliffe's world record.
Dibaba seriously switched to Nike??????!!!!

I agree on your comment. Obviously she's with Nike now, but I think that her customfit spikes weren't ready yet. She'll be racing in Nike-spikes pretty soon, I'll bet.
Dibaba is marketable worldwide. And my guess is that she will break the marathon world record within the next 5 years. Marathons are more marketable than track athletes. Like them or not, Nike makes calculated sponsorship decisions.
