Manny Pacquiao -- Suspicious or superstitious?

Your thoughts on the whole USADA in Golden Boy's pocket statement? Regardless, Floyd's doing a great job making Manny look baaaad.

I think this makes him look dirty. He is saying that he will do urine tests and other things but we know through track and field that urine tests can be masked and that it is more important to have PED's during training then actual competition. I think that all athletes should have random testing year round like cycling has gone to. Also I think that boxing's idea of drug testing is a joke especially for a sport where strength makes such a difference.

Interesting. I don't trust Golden Boy, especially after seeing the judging of the first Diaz-Malignaggi fight, but I've never heard of any connection between Golden Boy and USADA (or Travis Tygart, whom I knew before he went to USADA). Manny is looking real bad here.

I don't like it. It's not an insult to ask someone to be tested, and with his refusal for blood testing and ridiculous defamation lawsuit to Mayweather, he looks as guilty as Rafael Palmeiro wagging his finger repeatedly saying he never used PEDs. I have to think 100% of clean athletes would never object to any kind of testing in this day of perpetual suspicion. Unfortunate.

According to ESPN.com, Manny is refusing to take a blood test the day before the fight because he believes it will affect his performance in the fight, but there is no mention of 30 days before the fight.

He was blood tested (on HBO's 24/7) before the Ricky Hatton fight about 2 weeks prior to the fight and he was clean for that fight in which he knocked out Hatton in the 2nd round (and it was a KO not a TKO).

Manny's promoter is going to talk to Manny about taking the blood test 2 weeks prior to the fight as he did with the Hatton fight. Now if he refuse that compromise then he is being very suspicious.

Pro boxing is the most corrupt sport on the planet. Victories and championships are bought and sold. Seriously, who cares if boxers are doping?

Pacquiao is clean, but he has a problem with being tested close to bouts. This is a physiological and psychological problem, and he is not willing to change that.

Mayweather and company are just jumping on the chance to denigrate Pacquiao.

He has been tested zillions of times, and has always come out clean. He is a natural.

You have to remember that he has gone up through the weight classes, and that is not easy.

Although I try not to jump to conclusions about alleged dopers, you seem to be on the side of virtually every alleged or adjudged doper. Why is that?

Neither you nor I know whether Pacquiao is clean. I would love to believe he is, but I've had doubts in the past, and this latest dispute inclines me to believe that it's more likely than not that he's a doper. Arum and others seem to have done a pretty good job of obfuscating the debate, suggesting that (1) Pacquiao is simply resisting blood withdrawals within a couple of days before the fight, (2) USADA is in the pocket of Golden Boy, and (3) Mayweather is simply trying to get under Pacquiao's skin or get out of the fight altogether. I don't think that any of those suggestions bear up under scrutiny, although many sports journalists and members of the general public seem to be taking the Pacquiao camp's talking points at face value.

I give Mayweather credit for insisting on serious doping testing, even if it jeopardizes a guaranteed payday of tens of millions of dollars for him.

Saying Pacquiao is clean is like me saying your mother is a prostitute. Do I know that? No, I don't. I'm making a huge assumption that only the person bedding your mother would know because he has to pay her when it's over.

The point is to not make any assumptions you know nothing about. If you aren't in front of that person 24/7 to see what he/she is doing, you know nothing.

I have no idea if Pac-man is doping or not. I have a problem w/ the whole process, though, and the way it has been manipulated by the Mayweather camp to make it appear that Pacquiao is doping. There are independent agencies that regulate boxing. It is their job to set the drug testing protocols. As long as Paquiao abides by those protocols, then he is not guilt (Not innocent, but not guilty). IF the controls and protocols are not good enough, the beef is with the boxing agencies, not Pacquiao.

Pacquiao is willing to abide by the Nevada Boxing Commission's protocols, but Mayweather doesn't think that's good enough. I agree. I think it's great that Mayweather is using his clout to get the sport to consider a protocol that's more in line with WADA and USADA standards, even if it's only for one fight, and even if Mayweather is acting purely out of self-interest.

I don't think some of you know the whole story. Manny has agreed to abide by whatever testing (blood, urine, etc.) that the Nevada State Athletic Commission (the governing body that has jurisdiction over this fight) deems necessary. He is just not going to allow Mayweather to take it upon himself to be one who sets the rules. That is the perogative of the commissions, not the boxers. Also, he has repeatedly agreed to have his blood drawn in his locker room immediately after the fight. Why is that not satisfactory to Mayweather? The truth is that Mayweather watched Pacquiao completely obliterate Ricky Hatton inside two rounds and then relentlessly pummel Miguel Cotto into submission and is scared shitless. Remember, mayweather himself considered Cotto too big of a risk to fight and entered into a phoney "retirement" for the express purpose of not fighting him. He is deliberately throwing a monkey wrench into this fight in order to get out of going through with it.

The only reason this is a controversy is because cracked-out Floyd Mayweather Sr. is able to flat-out make shit up and have people believe him. Pacquiao is willing to abide by other methods of testing (urine)just before the fight, and is allowing a blood test 30 days out and immediately after; Mayweather's camp is just full of shit.

I don't think the Nevada Boxing Commission's protocols are very good either, but I think the way to address that is to get the boxing commission to change their protocols, not for fighters to arrange their own. Like so much of boxing this argument comes off as just being for the show. I love the action in the ring, all this posturing....

Bingo. Mayweather has every right to petition the Nevada Commission to implement different testing procedures if he feels they are necessary. And if he is successful, then Pacquiao has an absolute obligation to abide by the revised protocol. But to try to dictate your own rules and then say that your opponent is either ducking you or has something to hide when he tells you to go screw yourself is something else entirely.

This is Mayweathers out, he doesn't want to really fight Manny, he just wants the payday, when Manny hands him his a$$( if the fight actually goes off) Mayweather will dangle this as an excuse as the reason he got a beat down.....

I don't agree. The Nevada Boxing Commission has been ineffectual in dealing with doping, and Pacquiao's camp knows that the Commission won't enforce strict doping controls, specifically including random blood testing within thirty days of the fight. There's no reason that the two biggest names in the sport can't agree to adhere to higher standards.

There's been a lot of talk that Mayweather is ducking Pacquiao by taking this position on doping controls. That, of course, is silly, since the fight goes forward if Pacquiao simply agrees to doping controls that most world-class athletes are required to abide by.

I still haven't seen a single good reason for Pacquiao's position -- which, contrary to a number of reports, is not merely opposition to blood-testing within a couple of days of the fight. All I've seen is a lot of trash-talking about Mayweather, his crazy father, and Golden Boy. It's a shame. I'd still love to see some reasonable explanation for Pacquiao's conduct.
