Am curious to know
I'm guessing Abdi Bile in one of the mid 90's world champs. I seem to remember him running a 1:46 last 800 of the 1500.
I would think it was the 2004 Olympics, but then I have never heard about the guy the other poster is talking about.
El Guerrouj, 2004 Athens Olympics, 1:46 last 800m.
He also ran the last 600m in 1:20 (27, 26, 26.5) in the 1997 world championship.
The aforementioned Abdi Bile closed the last 800 meters at the 1987 IAAF World Track & Field Championships in 1:46.00.
Not what you asked about, but the only negative split that I can readily recall was in Jim Ryun's world-record 880: 53.3/51.6 = 1:44.9 (worth about 1:44.2 for 800m).
This was about 90min after running a heat in 1:50.
He was 19.

Both Bile (87 World Champs-3:36.8) and EL G (2004 Olympics-3:34.2) covered the last 800m in 1:46.9, not 1:46.0.
Bile's last 700m was quicker (1:31.6 to 1:32.4)
Lagat ran 1:46 in the prelims before osaka, letting up the last 20m. Probably could have run 1:45 if he was pushing all the way to the line like a final.
Check it out, it is one of the surest signs to me that he cheats.
Not a 1:46 but I think at big tens last year the final 800 of the 1500 was about 1:49.

In that same 2004 Olympic race, Rui Silva (bronze medalist) closed sub 1:46

I believe Rui Silva actually had the fastest last 800m in that race (Athens 2004) as he moved from mid pack up to third. It was still a 1:46, but a faster 1:46 if memory serves me.
It always amazes me watching the super elites go out in 2:00 for the first 800m and look as if they're jogging. Also, seeing Lagat and El G fly down the backstretch on the final lap (51.9!) in that Olympic final just floors me every time. Because of the history of El G and Lagat, that race stands out as one of the most epic I've ever seen.

It wasn't under 1:46, but checking my records he was slightly faster than EL G.
He went through 700m in 1:48.1 and finished in 3:34.7, so that's 1:46.6.
Which is incredibly fast and almost unbelievable!

And the first 800 was a 2:30.

very interesting
for bile
1'49.9 / 1'46.9 ->~ 3'28.7 !
2'05.2 / 1'31.6 ->~ 3'26.7 !!!
for hicham
1'47.3 / 1'46.9 ->~ 3'28.4
2'01.8 / 1'32.4 ->~ 3'27.8
hicham's is close enough as he was in 3'37 shape earlier in zurich
bile really was in some quite unimagineable shape in that '87 race ?!

Sorry about the 5000m race instead of the 1500.
