Not having work, kids, or the everyday demands that younger folks have leaves old people with time. With that extra time, they begin to ponder inevitable “out of ‘your’ control” facts (i.e. – death). Since no non-morbid person wants to talk about death non-stop, why not talk about the other inevitable “out of ‘your’ control” fact – the weather.

Your stereotypes are somewhat misleading, however, mine could also be the same. I will say that an old person being nice to me about this could be expected. What I am harping on is that they(you) won't shut the hell up and let me get on with my day when they/I bring up the weather topic.
Ok, ok, you might say that, "well you brought it up." So I did, but lets make it brief, please.
I'm a young person, and this post doesn't make much sense to me. I think if you're gonna have a conversation, it's fine to talk about the weather, I do it all the time, but old people are usually going to assume you want to talk for more than 30seconds, so do the best you can and if you really must go, then just politely interrupt and say you have to go.
Runners talk about the weather a lot too.

Let's make this crystal clear.
Weather affects old people more than younger people. It is tougher for old people to regulate their body temperature, AND they also don't want/can't shovel snow, have a harder time controlling a car in bad weather and even just walking in it so the weather very much affects their lives.
Know this, and accept it. Hell, I'm still 16 years from retirement and I'm already planning on where to go, and it will be somewhere where I won't be shoveling snow or mowing any damn grass. This will mean either condo living or perhaps a house in Arizona. I can always go somewhere else for a couple months in the summer if it gets too hot.
Hmmm. Didn't you say that YOU initiate the topic of weather but you think it's the old people who are obsessed? At this very moment you know, there may well be a discussion at Letsnotdiejustyet.com where people are discussing you and your fixation with weather.
Seriously, weather is a "safe" topic in situations where people who have little in common or at least don't know if they do think a little more interaction than a "hello" is appropriate. I always have "weather" chats with our mailman. He always initiates them and he's younger than I am. Neither of us knows much about the other and I doubt either of us want a conversation that will degenerate into an argument so "Man, this cold weather really sucks" is much safer than "How about that same sex marriage law?"
It is true that weather becomes more of an issue for you as you get older. When those massive heat waves hit the midwest and kill a few people it's nearly always older people who die. An ice storm is much less a problem for an 18 year old who has better balance than an 80 year old and who is much, much, less likely to die from falling on that ice. Old people who are on fixed incomes can take a real financial hit if there's prolonged stretch of very cold weather and they use more gas, oil, or electricity heating their homes than they'd budgeted for.
But if you'd rather not talk with someone about the weather then don't bring it up.

Good point, Rich, I was wondering the same thing myself. For a guy who thinks old folks are obsessed with talking about weather, it's strange he seems to like to bring it up. Who really is concerned with weather then??

For generations, the elderly were considered as the 'wise ones' and with that position they watched the weather for coming omens with which to scare the younger generations into actions that were more constructive for the long term health of the group, such as population control.
Maybe some of it just rubbed off? Who knows.
