Dunno - but I heard a that aroung 5 years ago a lot of the top London competitors were drinking this
Folks have been using Coke for a long time - marathoners, Ironman triathletes, ultrarunners, etc. Try it in training first. I like it better with the fizz, but to each his/her own.
it was coke syrup. we used to drink it before XC races to settle our stomachs - the caffeine didn't hurt either.
They sold it in bottles like cough syrup.
In "Bowerman and the Men of Oregon" Kenny Moore mentions hiim and Shorter preparing for the '72 Oly marathon, and de-fizzing Cokes in the shower to prepare their fluid bottles. Before the advent of Gatorade and subsequent sport drinks, Coke was water with sugar and caffeine (similar to Gatorade without the extra electrolytes). De-fizzing takes away the carbonation that can upset your stomach while running, etc. and presto, you have a homemade sports drink!

Yes, Shorter really popularized de-fizzed Coke in the early 1970s, although others may have used it first. I remember a picture of Frank winning Fukuoka in our local running newsletter ( the Minnesota Distance Runner ), and the caption read "SHORTER goes better with Coke". This was of course a take-off on the popular Coke slogan "Things go better with Coke!" I remember running Boston one year and my wife was at mile 23 with a big cup of de-fizzed Coke. That really hit the spot, but I suppose I could have been DQ'd (by today's rules) for taking aid at an unauthorized aid station. Of course back in the early 1970s Boston had NO authorized aid stations!! Also, we took orange slices from spectators along the course, which would be frowned on today, perhaps. Ah, the good old days!
So Snopes would say fact not fiction. Thanks All. Good savings over expensive sportsdrinks.
Just be aware that the "sugar" in American Coke has been HFCS for years - it's a different drink than in Shorter's day. Opinions vary on whether or how much that matters.
I ran across the USA in 64 days on water, Coke, and Snikers bars.

So just get the good stuff with cane sugar in glass bottles from Mexico. Costco sells in now by the case.
