The group Alabama would have been a great rock band if they hadn't wasted their time doing country music.

Kinks are one of the most lavishly praised band ever, though they aren't recognized that way in the US (why one of the most consistent bands ever is reduced to "All Day and All of the Night" "You Really Got Me" and "Lola" will forever be beyond my comprehension). They're more than the kult their followers want them to be.
This is a difficult question to answer, as plenty of music critics recognize the brilliance of bands like Big Star even if the public doesn't.
Small Faces is the greatest band that gets no recognition in the US. It's baffling. Their heirs, Blur, are also awesome but the US knows them by their grunge parody song.
Slade is fantastic and underplayed.
Anything Stiff Records is criminally underrated in the US.
Iggy and the Stooges' albums Raw Power and Fun House are outstanding, but I think Van Morrison is the most underrated. Everybody knows Browneyed girl, but the album Into the Music and qute a few others are what make Van great. Who else would write a ten minute song imitateing a lions growl? To really get into Van I think you have to take some time and listen to the records a few times. ( I am a big Van fan and want to spread the word.)

I'd agree. "Summer of '69" is the most overlooked anthem of rock, ever!
