Water, a few gels, and a few electrolyte tabs/pills. That's all she needs.

I'll give her some gel...
alberto should know better...flat coke is 10X better than gator or power aid...honestly you can't go wrong with plain water and a gu packet every 5 mi.
kara got bad advice and should go find another marathon ASAP, maybe Montreal on Sept 13. ( offering $10K prize money) She needs to get this monkey off her back sooner rather than later as she's done the work and deserves results.
Maybe it was the classic seinfeld mix up where she grabbed what she thought was her special drink and it was actually hot coffee which burnt her pallett causing her to puke everywhere

I think she should try flat Coke. I know its old school but if she could manage that it would be way better than jut water.

worked for Shorter.
People differ widely on this question. Personally, I cant even take water without vomiting. A sports drink is out of the question. I cant eat or even drink much for about 30 mins. post race and even then its very limited. The digestive system essentially shuts down during a hard run and I doubt that much of anything taken during a race will help at all because its not being digested and is not available to the body. It just sits in the stomach, hopefully without it causing vomiting.
Careful in your faulty assumptions about Erich Segal. By my memory, he ran very low 3:0x at Boston Marathon. Derderian would know. Beyond that, Segal was a Yale classics professor with a true appreciation for the Olympics, the marathon, Frank Shorter. A friend to the sport.

Not true at all. That is what happens when you exceed the gastric emptying limit as far as cho concentration. Gebrselassie took in something like 500 calories during his marathon WR. I wish I could find the website that listed what he took and when, but it was extensive. basically, it was GU every 5mi or so and some sort of sports drink every 2mi.
Of course, you are correct in that it is an entirely personal issue. Some people may tolerate undiluted gatorade just fine, while others may only be able to tolerate water. Renato Canova mentioned this in that thread last April about James Kwambai and Duncan Kibet. I wonder if we'll hear more about Kara and her issues. I can't imagine they haven't experimented with this mix during training, although maybe they hadn't used it in the heat. Or maybe she just got unlucky, who knows.
If she'd won, then Al's a cheat. She gets 10th & he's a buffoon. It's a bloody marathon for goodness sakes, anything can happen. Rodgers in '76, Salazar in '84, Paula in '04, Haile in London '06---ship happens.
