The USA Outdoors had much lower attendance than last year's OTs. Of course every venue always jacks up the numbers. To jack up the attendance, UO passed out free tickets to thousands of barbarians encamped around Amazon Park a few blocks from where I live.
I would think though that the NCAA would be impressed more by the Lakers 15th World Championships celebration at the L.A. Coliseum. It drew 93,000 fans. 1,000,000 fans jammed the streets to see the Laker's players on a rinky-dink float. Those are the kinds of numbers that even Portland, Seattle, Stanford, Husky, Sacramento, and San Diego could come close to with their population base. The Mt. Sac Relays, the world's largest track meet, draws some 200,000 athletes and fans each spring in L.A.
Adidas, Aeg / Home Depot, and USATF pretty much eff up the Carson attendance each year by providing 3rd World facilities to L.A. track fans. I.E. no running water, no shade, no food, no toilets, no ice, etc. They take care of themselves handsomely though. This year the VIP section, with Mark Wetmore, Doug Logan, and Gravy Train, had tents, free beer and wine, folding chairs, and free food. But eff the L.A. fans, they don't matter at all. "We're in the Ghetto, just be happy with what you have" is the meet management's attitude.
