Okay, I just saw this on the German RunnersWorld website. They recommend doing 800m intervals @ 5k pace with 3min jogs in between.
For a halfway decent runner and given that I trust JD that VO2max starts at 2mins, that leaves about half a minute of VO2max per repetition. Do 8 of them and you are at 4mins VO2max. Sounds extremely unefficient for a workout.
Now I know runnersworld is for the slow runners and if it takes them 3m30s to complete each rep then this is a whole different story. Still, this leaves me with two questions:
1.) Wouldn't it generally be better to recommend times (e.g. 4-5 min intervals) instead of distance?
2.) Despite being such an unefficient workout for faster runners, it seems this workout is still incorporated in quite a lot of training plans...why?
