Isn't Berkeley the place where Rono set all those world records?
No. He set one out of his 5 WRs there.
Wind is supposed to be 15mph in Berkeley at race time. How many of these guys will now show up at Stanford the next week?
not going to happen.
I live in berkeley and i can tell you---it will be too windy for Fam to break the record. Winds will be coming primarily from the WNW to NW tonight, giving runners a headwind for approx. 250m of the track (imagine looking north at the stadium in one end zone, the stadium is built at the bottom of a slant on the right. Since the wind is coming at you off the left side (headwind off the left shoulder, it will be cradled by the hills inside the stadium, giving runners fits).
It's a shame because the temps will be perfect. Hope the winds die down. I will probably be there, want to support a first time meet.
Porn Stache--
there is a big f***ing mountain range in between Stanford and the ocean, whereas there is a just a body of water (the bay) between Cal and the ocean.
Rono did set a 5k WR there 30 some years ago, so here's to wishing Fam good luck, may the running gods bless him with a tail wind the entire time!
can I get an oreo twister?
it is too bad they didn't just aim for cardinal for the 10K.
is it just me but why does Fam always run well in April and then seem to run slower throughout the summer
I think its a shame he didnt try it, but I think Khalid Kannouchi would have been able to break it.
Isn't Rupp running the 10,000 tonight at Oregon Relays? Too bad Fam didn't go to Oregon instead...
Anyway...Rupp will run faster tonight than Fam

It is referred to as DANIELS TRAINING.

he is not the only one that this happens to, why is it that a great number of elites in the USA run well at these April meets to get the standards then cannot produce when it counts later in the summer, peak too early for standard times?
Is Teg going to be in the mix with Fam?
The 10k USR is w/o a doubt the softest on the books; when Kennedy was in sub-13 5K shape, he definitely could have run faster. If Fam is in 13:10 shape and gets a few varibles to fall his way, the record is his. I think there are 3-4 U.S. runners who could break the record if they took a serious shot at it.
The temps are perfect so that's one variable in place. As noted, Berkeley is usually breezier than Stanford since it is adjacent to the SF Bay while Stanford has the coastal mountain range to protect it from the westerly winds. Wind tunnel is probably an exaggeration. However if today's breeze dies down Fam does have a shot at a very fast race. The track is very fast and its surface is not too hard.At the moment there are some light gusts of wind.Try www.accuweather.com (94720 ZIP Code) to see what the evening might hold in store.

Wow! Good luck, Fam. He must be pretty confident in his abilities to be going for the record. 27:13 is pretty damn fast.

Yes Rupp is running the 10000 tonight, but he probably won't have a crazy fast time, just cause it's been stupid windy the last couple days. Also if there's no one pushing him I doubt he'll do more than he has to. He's just getting the standard (last week he jogged 13:55 for the same reason).

Fam ran 27:38 a long time ago too (in a race with Webb, Ritz). It's not like Rupp is astronomically better or something. Rupp was sharp and ran 13:18 indoors. Fam said he wasn't sharp and ran 13:16 in a kick race and leading the whole way.
Fam had looked pretty darn sharp himself on the roads leading up the his Mt. Sac 5K. He did do a lot of leading, but his PR is also 13:11 from the same meet. Fam was actually in the race when Rupp ran his surging 27:33 and dropped out I believe (fair enough everyone has bad ones). But the fact is, Rupp has clearly come up to a new level since that 27:33 in 2007. Key points would be his strong time and top white boy honors at the Olympic 10K last summer, the insane 30-40 workout he did in the fall shortly after resuming training, and his domination of very good 10K runners in XC despite having a short season.
Remember that the guy who outkicked Rupp in the indoor 5K won and handily beat Fam at the Carlsbad 5K. Rupp's 13:18 was done on banked turns on a 200 meter track and was done in Feb. He was fit, but not sharp, he was doing 90-100 mile weeks during that time. It's like Abdi said, Rupp is the man to beat right now in America on the track.
In the 5K you have Lagat and Teg who can beat him, but in a fast rabbited race we don't know what Lagat's capable of anymore, and Rupp is likely in the 13:00-13:05 range.
In the 10K you have Abdi and maybe Fam or Ritz (mid summer) who could hang with Rupp in a fast 10K. Basically in order to beat Rupp in either of these distances you have to be capable of at least scaring the American record in a fast race, or running 1:55 over the last 800 in a slow tactical race. That is the level Rupp is at now, and the scariest part about it is that he knows it. Rupp went from hopefully being able to make usa national teams in 2007 to being a favorite for the usa national champion in 2009.
All of these fools should be running at Stanford if they want fast times and a good crowd. Especially Fam and Barrios who ran a hard 5k last week.
