At the age of 46 I can run 5 Miles in 37:30 - Is this any good or just average ?

It makes you healthier than most people and you are active, so you are to be saluted for all of that. But it's not a particular fast time, no. I ran at least four minutes faster than that at that age and I wasn't really training very hard, I was doing it off "residual" effects. If you add some elements to your training like long intervals (1000s, etc.), you can bring that time down.
You've got 4 years on me but that's my daily easy pace, nearly jogging, for 5 miles and I'm not fast by any means. Plenty of guys faster than myself. Cerainly not a horrible time though. How many miles per week are you running?
Joan Benoit-Samuelson laughs at you.
I think that if you comaper that time to others in your age group at large races you stack up quite well.Probably top 10%.
You are far from a stud though
Well your certainly way above average if you compare yourself to the other guys in your office building or all the men sitting down for dinner tonight at any chain restaurant in the US.
On the other hand 37:30 for 5 miles is basically equivilent to a 22:38 5K which at age 46 would give you an Age grade right about 63.3(which puts you a bit above average in running circles) and that 5K time would have placed you in 121st out of 312 at the Carlsbad 5K among all the other men that were between 45-49 years of age.
Breaking 30:00 at 46 is very good.
37:30 = average (to somewhat above average if you don't have a running background).
32:30 = decent.
27:30 = outstanding/national class.
25:00 = very highly ranked in the world.
I am only running 4 times per week, 5 miles each session, so not much. Early twenties my PR's were 800M 1:55, 1500M 3:57 and I ran 2:38 in the Skylon International Marathon as well. Only now getting back into the running..
It certainly shows that you can still move better than 99% of the population your age.
I'm 48 and I still break 28 minutes - but I've been running since age 13 and have a 24:45 PR (age 25).
Keep it up!
AT 48 I run right around 30 minutes for 5 miles. In a very small race this would place me reasonably well, but in a race on sponsored by my local USATF association I'm at best in the middle of the pack.
You've got good basic speed.
If you gradually increase your training your 5 mile time will start coming down
I still maintain breaking 30:00 at 46 is solid, well off of national class but not too bad. Some people decline quickly and others retain their comparitive performance levels. Of course you have the Colleen De Reuck's of the world who can hammer that back to back so it's all relative.
Still, USATF races attract the best runners in your population base, so you're comparing yourself in general with the remaining 45-49 AG runners who are still taking the sport very seriously or started running later, e.g. their lives/running careers have have not been interrupted with the consequences of families, demanding jobs, illnesses or injuries, not running, disinterest, etcetra.
Which USATF region are you referring to? New England? Pacific? New York City Metro? There aren't too many regions where 30:00 for 5 miles is 'mediocre' for the 45+ AG. It may not be top 15 but it isn't bad anywhere, is usually sufficient to help a master's club scoring out, and should be worth Grand Prix points.
It is what it is. No need to compare it to anything or anyone else. If you're interested in getting back into the sport, the objective is to run as well as you're able to run. Given your background and your light running to date, I would say that time will become a memory.
I find it useful to take whatever a race's age-graded figure is and try to have the same one across the board, i.e., in other distances, and improve upon it. Good luck.
I don't know if anyone else has noticed but I believe this is the most charitable response anyone on this message board has ever received regarding a question of "Hey Guys, is my time good?" Maybe Let's Run is finally growing up! Its nice to see people give constructive responses to these questions rather than dissing them.

Is that 37:30 all out in race? Or just a training run time? And what time of the day did you run that time?

I ran 28:05 at 46. Wow, thank you.
Those times seem a little arbitrary but I would say they are reasonable assessments. How many guys can run 28:00 at 46? Not that many, probably less than 75 in the US. There aren't thousands of 46 y/o guys breaking 30:00 either.
Here are the top 10% of the 45-49 Age Group of a fairly competitive race (97 total in 45-49 age group). Some pretty solid runners here. Results include age adjusted times:
