I want your expert opinion of what went wrong in the 800m tonight.

haha, I was expecting this.
he looked bad. he didn't race for a month or more due to a blister so I don't know what his training looked like, but it obviously didn't help him.
tactically I've never thought Wheating runs well, but has been able to rely on his talent and kick. Maybe he'll learn from this.
Outdoors should be much better, he won't want to spot Hernandez that much again!
Great tactics by Texas boys by the way.
Hopefully the Big Goof has learned not to spot JH four places at the 400 when the latter has his own personal rabbit (TE)
Wheating was grimacing like he was in pain. He was lucky to get 2nd, and if there was anything wrong, then I'd say he did a great job in toughing it out for the team. On to outdoors!

Yeah, he needs to be in postion with 200-300 to go (outdoor track). Indoors I'm not sure he understood that going into that last corner leaves not much to be done, especially going up a bank.
Most people have a tougher time indoors, a guy like him is probably as bad as it gets for an 800.
So much for Wheating having an untouchable kick like all of Letsrun claims.
He's too tall for indoor running away. He'll run away from the Texas duo outdoors, providing he stays healthy.
He was grimacing. Has he in fact been hurt? I just thought his tactics weren't that good and tall guys have a hard time running indoors. I'm 6'4" and it was murder running the 800 and 1600r.
Andy is 6'5" and long-legged. Considering everything he did O.K.. He still needed to get up on JH's ass by 600, though.

Didn't race for 4 weeks due to a blister? You've got to be kidding, he isn't running marathons here. I saw a dudes whole foot sole peel off once after a down hill relay leg. He taped it up and ran a good half-marathon a week later.
God, where I'm from coaches would disown a guy who wouldn't race an 800m due to a blister unless it was down to the bone.
someone on the flotrack coverage posted that he was just diagnosed with a stress fracture last week. I wouldn't put much into that, but all the posters on that coverage seemed pretty sincere (unlike so much here).
guess we'll have to see.

your coaches must be idiots. ducks just won nationals indoors. wheatings second NCAA team victory. 2nd runner up at ncaas. dmr victory. OLYMPIAN! but hey, run it to the bone baby.
Until you have a real grasp of what type of blister this kid had, don't act all high and mighty. That blister could have been seriously infected or something else that could actually prevent him from not only training at full capacity but also from performing at full capacity on any given day (like if he were on heavy antibiotics).
He just got outraced by Hernandez, just like at outdoors. Am I allowed to say that on Letsrun?
sure. and beyond tactics there may be logical fitness reasons why. wheating was not there for the win, bottom line. on to outdoors for him (if he is healthy).

Hernandez did run a better race. Wheating needs to be closer. He made up a ton of yardage at the outdoors last year but still lost. Wheating has more potential but needs more racing experience. Since Wheating's only been running seriously for what, three years - that might be why he's lacking in savvy. I think that outdoors he's going to crush the field at nationals. Assuming he doesn't get blisters! : 0
I agree with the guys who say he's too tall for indoor running.
Hernandez's experience (compared to Wheating's) showed. Decent interview with Jacob:
Comes off as a decent guy. Maybe he can get under 1:45 this season.
I heard an interview with Lananna a couple days ago. First off, he commented that the indoor 200 track is a bit of a problem for a guy as big as Wheating. Secondly, he did confirm that Wheating has been dealing with a blister of some sort on his foot. I'd imagine after the full day that he had yesterday, that blister was pretty painful today. Still no excuse...Wheating is a much better 800 meter guy than Hernandez. At NCAA's, Wheating's inexperience let Hernandez get away from him, then he had to fight off guys to get around the final corner, still almost beating Hernandez. At the Olympic Trials, Wheating literally crushed Hernandez. I see Wheating's future being at the mile and outdoors. Nevertheless, he had a good result (second), when he could easily have finished 4th without that kick of his.
Who cares what went wrong, Wheating still stayed HOT as ever!!!
I watched the race and did not think Hernandez was threatened in the last straight. I would not consider him almost beating Hernandez. He got beat handily and it may be due to tactics, injury, sickness, fitness, or anything, but he got beat fairly soundly I think.
Outdoors at NCAAs he almost beat Hernandez.
Guys ever consider that the Oly trials was just a fluke?
