I have a buddy who lists a road time trial as a pr, and a 3200 time that he claims is his 2 mile pr. The road time trial - don't get me started. This is not on a certified road race course, I'm not even sure how or when the distance was measured. The 3200 was on the track at least, but that's 3+ seconds he's giving himself for the 2 mile.
So him claiming these as pr's bothers me. But I'm usually the type to let other people do their own thing and mind my own business, so I don't understand why I let it bother me.
What do you think?
Does it bother you when people claim false PR's? Should it?

It usually doesn't bother me unless they are really adamant about them.
I was an assistant HS track coach a few years ago and this one kid would constantly lie about his mile time.....TO ME!
He posted his PR early in the season (4:58) and only matched it one other time the rest of the season, YET at practice after each meet I would hear him telling people that he ran 4:30's and 4:40's. That pissed me off.
In the end, they're only fooling themselves, but I can see how it can be annoying (just because of how stupid it is). -
It bothers me.
Had a recruit lie big-time about his PRs. These days, it's so easy to discover the truth.
I found out early and backed off, although the coach wouldn't confirm or deny the times.
This fal he clocked some pretty sweet 8Ks in the 33:00 range for another school. The coach must be wondering what happened to his 15:23 dude.
And, no, he's not a mail-order Kenyan. -
Pulitzer Prize for Fiction--seed sheet division.
#Junior high coach submits a 10.5 100m seed time and the kid asks me -how many laps?- -

Hi. I'm Running Dogg. What can I run for a 5k? -
You mean like GEOFFREY!!!!!

I met a kid in college who said he ran in high school. I believed him, he looked athletic and everything, so I asked him what he ran. Apparently he had run a 1:16 600m. I said wow, thats great, stuff like that.
600m times didn't mean an awful lot to me, but I knew that was fast so I tried to find a 400m time for him. In the process I realized that he would have had to beat our state record for the 600m by several seconds. Turns out he was quick, I found a 54s 400 time for him, but far from a state record holder. -
Go on the RT forums, you'll see lots of people posting about their claimed PR's from majorly downhill courses. I doubt they'd claim a PR from an uncertified short course but somehow having gravitational aid doesn't seem to throw up similar red flags.
-
Only when its a big lie like saying they ran a 4:00 mile back in the day or something.
-
Probably ran the 600-yard dash. Would make sense.
-
eh it doesn't bug me if they round a bit, like 4:43 and saying your a 4:40 miler, but when its complete b.s. thats just stupid

Usually people make up times when they think the people they are talking to have no clue and it really doesn't make any difference. I could (but don't) tell my entire family that my 5k pr is 13:40 vs 14:40 and they wouldn't think twice about it. But if I tried to bs my running friends and say I ran 14:39 it would make a huge difference.

The older you get, the faster your highschool times get. It is standard practice to round times off to the nearest ten seconds, always to the low end. As you grow older you can increase this percentage.

Hahaha, awesome. -
Only bothers me when coaches and unattached athletes lie about their entry times and bump people out of competitive heats. If you haven\'t run a time, you can\'t put it down as an entry. Especially if, just using the 800m as an example, you\'re putting down 1:52.00 and bumping out a guy who\'s really run 1:52.23 from a good heat he deserves to be in. That\'s really bothersome.

It doesn't bother me considering I can beat them all.
mile-3:39.23 (I tripped twice and brought a dog back to life before finishing)
800-1:31.99 (I was running from a pack of women that were cravin my weiner) -

should i assume that you're gay? (not that there's anything wrong with that)... -
We have a kid on our team who claimed he got 4th in the [email protected] state in D2 his senior year, which was really funny at the time cas the one kid on our team was like "hey i got 4th in the 3200 in d2 our senior year"..it was hilarious
But its pretty bad b/c the kid lies about his workout times..he will cross the line a good 3 seconds behind us, and when the coach asks for his time he will say he ran faster than us..thats when it pisses me off the most..but ive come to realize its a disease for him and if hes that much of a little bitch to have to lie his way through running and life ive learned to just laugh that he actually needs to -

Nope.
