i don't really understand these threads. it's not like you're going to run 3:59 for a mile but only like 15:30 for a 5k.
only a nut could take a 13:30 5k over a 3:59 mile, even though the 13:30 5k is actually a more-quality time. perception is reality and a 3:59 mile is golden in our world, a 13:30 5k is golden in a much smaller world of track nuts.

it's like magic, a wish, a genie granting u an either or....you aren't supposed to think past the proposition.
yes, I realize that you are setting a trap here, expecting everyone to pick the sub 4 minute mile; then you will denounce them as idiots that don't realize that the 13:30 5k is a better time than a 3:59 mile.
13:30 is pretty f***ing slow. beckelee would be in front of you long before you were done (2 laps, 5 laps?) whereas with a 3:59 you could be roger bannister, and he is fast. FAST. also, with a 359 you could train and beat hickum el garoush.
Sub-4 any day of the week over any time... it is considered rare, lists are actually kept, and for the rest of your life you will be spoken of as a sub-4 minute miler, just ask Len Sitko.

Okay...I don't follow the logic. I'd say it would've been harder to beat El G in his prime than Bekele. But either way, the "train and beat" idea can also be applied to a 5k, believe it or not.

I'm not so sure about that. El Gerrouj was beaten a number of times at his best distance in major races during his prime years. Bekele has never once lost a 10k (his main distance). He has lost a few off-distance races, but overall, I would argue that Bekele is, apparently, harder to beat than EL G.
As to the OP, I would choose 3:59. Much bigger milestone, and you wouldn't have to explain anything to anyone who asked how good you were. A 3:59 mile speaks for itself.
