The thing people have got to remember is that gregson missed all of december and part of january with his stress fracture. He has obviously worked hard on the cross training and has since got some good sessions done but this does not substitute for consistent training over a good period of time.
i think he has the basic level of fitness to run a great 1500, which he did in 3.37. but the 5k is a different beast and i think it showed last night he just didn't quite have the strength. i doubt whether he is anywhere near as fit now as when he ran 29.06 10k in terrible conditions beating all of australias best distance runners 5 months ago.
The kid will only get better and if he gets over to europe later this year you'll see more improvement i guarantee it.
Fernandez could'nt hold a torch to Ryan Gregson

Man both these guys are only kids, I just love the pressure everyone, that probably can't even imagine running that fast them is putting on these guys. I am sure 6 years from now when they are both 24/25 and are established senior athletes, people then maybe able to make statements on who's better then who. Until then, who care's and who remembers what you did as an 18 year old when your running crap at 25 anyway! ie. Alan Webb.

because a guy getting injured at the beginning of december is much different than a guy getting injured at the end of november.
on an unrelated note, when gregson broke the 1500 jr record he just went off and celebrated on his on. when fernandez broke the hs 3200 record he fell down on the track, then got up and congratulated everyone.
but seriously, does it really matter who's faster? we'll see at jr cross. -

To be fair to Gregson from what I can tell the Aussie media is not helping him. They have pretty much jerked him off and pegged him as the next Mottram. To make it worse it sounds like he's basically been a professional runner for some time now. To me this is not good, it's got to be too much pressure. At least Rupp has had collegiates to worry about beating, a college team to be around and work out with as he develops. German, Luke and Chris all the same. That takes some of the pressure off them.
Gregson might want to try and down play things until he is running 3:37 on a bad day and has a slew of 13:1X performances under his belt. I'm sure he was encouraged by mottrams antics, but Mottram was running 13:0X like habit and was rubbing elbows with the top 3% of the world class when his big projections started coming out. I think gregson will have his day, but he may enjoy the ride to it a bit more if he goes about it a little under the radar. Having a 13:56 day when all of Oz and a lot of others are watching is not fun. -

neither of them compete with 17 and 18 yo kenyans easily running 3.35, 7.40, 13.20, and 27.xx. get over it.
Name all of the 17-18 year old Kenyans? There are a few, but not that many...remember, we are talking 17-18. Last year the best youth (born 1991)times are:
1500 3:42.57 Kemoy Campbell JAM
3000 7:54.04 Jonathan Muia Ndiku KEN
5000 13:21.17 Jonathan Muia Ndiku KEN -

Gregson: 18 years old 3.41 1500m, 29.09 10km.... (beating olympians)
Fernandez: 7.59 3km, and waaaaaay too much hype.
Gregson is quite simply phenomenal, I think he will qualify for Berlin world champs next year as an 18-19 year old... thats is Cram/ Ovett-esque
you dumb tool.. after witnessing the greatness of the NANDEZ i bet you wish you could delete this thread instead of having people see how ignorant you are.. I bet you wish you could give the indoor college mile record holder a b****** this saturday.. I'm the the NANDEZ put you in your proper place -

you have it right i think...
Both are obviously great runners but fernandez has ran a little faster with the exception for gregsons 3:54 recently at sydney. However, fernandez was right there with his 3:55. the only difference. Fernandez was solo(won by 10 sec). Gregson didn't even win his race.
THE KID DIDN'T RUN A 3:54+! It doesn't matter that such a time is equivalent to his 1500 pr, because he did not run it! -
German Fernandez is HOLY wrote:

No.
Ryan Gregson is a faster middle distance runner than German Fernandez.
Fact. -
Don't forget, like the journalists in Australia have, that a guy called Richard Everest who is only 18, and recently broke the Australian U/20 Record for 3k (Formerly held by Mottram and then Gregson) ran 13:49 last night, and beat Gregson quite convincingly.
Well Done Aussie Journalists for getting so wrapped up in Gregson's Australian Record, and forgetting about another top junior who is beating Gregson and his Records. -

Did they actually race against eachother though? I don't mean as in the same race, but the same race within the race? Gregson went out at teh 1320 pace, did the other guy?
Gregson's time doesnt' say everything. Perhaps he wasnt' ready to run 1320. But perhaps he was ready to run 1335 or so and would have if that was the pace. Him running with the 1320 pace shows some real confidence....perhaps too much in this case, but something not many 18 year olds would do in a 5k. -

Gregson's got a faster 1500m. Fernandez has a faster mile. -
Bekele would have lapped Gregson in that 5K, and still had time to kiss the track, grab a water bottle and untie his shoes - Not a great performance at all, especially with the media spot-liht turned up on him. Kinda gotta question the coaching ?
-
Cameron page would beat german without a doubt....He has a great mindset for a young athlete and this would benefit him over the american...Not to mention cameron is only 14 years of age and un-officially ran a 3.54 mile during a training time trial by himself!! Cameron page is the real talk here!!
-
Cameron Page isnt 14 hes like 17 or 18 but he is a bloody great runner and did win national XC and has run and 8:05 when he was 16 or 17
-
to paraphrase eddie murphy...
"what has he done for me lately?"....
nothing.
Gregson vs Fernandez. That is what the fans want to see. -

So if this other dude spanked Gregson with a 13:49....what did Gregson run? And again is all this being done outdoors. HELL I wanted German to run a 5000 lasst year right after his 8:34 two mile. German would have been well into the 13:30's all alone. -
everyone is too wrapped up in this - gregson has said he thinks fernandez is better before and says it again in this video http://www.insideathletics.com.au/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=86:gregson-runnerstribe&catid=1:news&Itemid=2

Gregson disagrees with you!

you are either Gregson or Risely, if you are Gregson, talking about yourself is gay, if you are Risely, go run another 3.52 1500. sick. -
yea..... cause Gregson and Risley are the only people who could possibly know those things.... .
Good Post.
