This is for a family member who has had a run around with some diagnostics.
30 year olf female. She has been feeling like crap with many signs of hypothyroidism (lethargy/fatigue, some unexplained weight gain though her weight is still considered normal, weakness, some dry skin, lots of indigestion). She couldn't get in to see a doctor, but did get to see a nurse practitioner at the local hospital system.
She said she'd do a thyroid test, but only did TSH. It came back at 2.4, and the range was up to 5, and she said that was normal. We requested that more tests be done, namely T3 and T4.
She got a piece of paper in the mail saying her test "came back normal." We requested the specific blood values and this is what we got:
Free T3 = 3.9 (3.5 - 7.7)
Free T4 = 1.39 (0.8 - 2.7)
TSH = 2.69 (0.3 - 3.0) yes, that reference range is different than previously.
I believe we are seeing low-normal T3 with high-normal TSH. From what I have read, this is on to something, especially when combined with the symptoms. A thyroid antibody or TRH stim test may be needed to further evaluate the prolem.
Any opinions?
