What is their status now? Jackie had a double metatarsal stress fracture - does it mean she is done for the season? Laura was supposed to have a bone scan a couple days ago to see if she had a fracture too, how did it come out? Will Wetmore redshirt them both along with Odlaug? And why so many injuries on the Ranch this year?

1500 miles a year in high school and now come the injuries.

1500 miles a year? That's less than 5 miles a day, what are you talking about.
Regardless, sometimes you can try to do everything right and still get injurred. You have to take a risk and straddle that line of ultimate fitness and injury if you want to be great.
I know. That's an average of 30 miles per week.

That to me says an annual average of 30 per week, or 1500m. It's nothing uncommon. It just isn't very condusive to a long term, injury-free career.

From the Bingham cross-country website, Laura did 546 miles summer of 99, 455 in 00, and 534 in 01. Jackie did 544, 464, 546. Each summer session was 13 weeks, so in 01, they averaged about 41/42 a week. I doubt Wetmore upped that tremendously during their first summer.
It has been my observation after about 6 years of watching incoming college freshmen that freshmen injuries tend to be related more to trying to match the higher training intensity of the more mature college runners rather than just the typical increase in volume.
And what about the rest of the year? Is it plausible that their average over the summer is the same as their annual average; that their summer-base mileage volume remained constant through their precompetition and competetion phase? I'd say no.

A low volume program like that isn't very condusive to one's long-term career. Example:

And so many other runners, whose names are not known to those on this board whose careers ended because of low volume and high intensity.
