Can an 18 year old male with an 18:00 5k PR after a year of training eventually qualify for the Olympic Trials Marathon?

no
of course it is possible, just unlikely.
it is possible i will win the lotto and not have to work ever again, just unlikely.
what are your odds? who knows, too many variables, but i ran high 16's within months of training and i only got to 2:23.
but i did not run in HS and started on the roads. i think i would have been better off had i focused on speed early on and not moved to the marathon so quickly....hindsight is a bitch :)
Anything is possible my friend!
What was the "year of training" like? If you worked your ass of for and 18:00, then there isn't much chance, but if you jogged 3 miles a day for a year and ran 18:00, then maybe you could do it. We need more info.
You haven't provided much information about yourself, but I say don't limit yourself. The odds are against you, but it's certainly not impossible. Being a good marathoner is less about speed and more about consistency, durability, and dedication. If you can run high mileage consistently over the next several years and avoid injury, you can continue to improve as a marathoner well into your 30s. You could be a late bloomer. But you'll never know till you try and don't let anyone tell you that you can't do something.
would "jogging" an hour a day be considered working my ass off?
after a years training that should be the pace you should be running an easy/steady run at for 10. you need to get yourself a coach and only when your running that pace for 10 miles and it feels easy should you even contemplate thinking about the marathon. i know.
Everyone who says this is possible is an idiot. No matter what his talent level he's not going to progress in one years worth of training to become an olympic marathoner. Am I not reading this correctly or is everyone here just insane? Stop giving false hope much?
no u misread. i have only been training for a year.

NO!!! Remember Bob Denis who's goal was to obtain a complete state of laziness. This included running 2 (count 'em 2) hours per day. He finished 4th in the 1968 Oly. marathon trials. Plus at one time he held the US 50 mile record.
Derek Clayton trained 160 miles/week while holding a full time job.
Don't talk about working any part of your body off with only one hour/day.
