Between Queens and the Greenbelt trail in Northport/Sunken Meadow basically Nassau County and the very western part of Suffolk county- and suggestions on good terrain to put in some miles?
Much appreciated.

depends on where you are, the greenbelt trails are pretty nice, eisenhower park is always a nice break. bethpage state park isnt too bad, sunken meadow is a hilly but enjoyable trail. i will sometimes go to bike trails and run on those against the wishes of other bikers.
Not a trail, but a paved bike path:
From massapequa (or maybe Massapequa park) train station (on Sunrise Highway) there is a bike path that goes about 6ish miles to Bethpage State Park. It's a nice path as you can go out, do some loops around bethpage, then come back via the path, if you want to put in over 12 miles. I've only run on it once and it was a few years ago, so the distances may be incorrect, but it is a nice path.
Also, definatley hit Sunken Meadow. Lots of great trails, and it's right on the Greenbelt, so you can hop onto it to add on if you don't feel like doing loops.
Again, not a trail, but the Jones Beach bike path (jones beach ampitheater to wantagh park) is pretty nice and scenic. lots of bike and rollerskater traffic though. I think it's about 4 miles out.
Connetquot isn't too bad. Totally flat and there are a good amount of trails through the park.
Belmont park has some trails too (though not too long and totally flat). If you park at Belmont, you can run through the park, and there's a trail that goes South to Babylon which is about 2+ miles out.
hope this helps.
Any trails near stony brook? I am going to be moving there for grad school in like a week... And I've been putting in 80 miles a week, but mostly on soft stuff. Is it just going to be roads that I'll have to run on there?
Yeah there's some very limited trails near sheep pasture road which is off of 25A. There's also the stony brook xc course in the jeridine property off of stony brook road near south P off of campus. Otherwise, the roads it is.
drive to the rocky point trails for a fairly lame off-road experience. get lost- no, really. you're never too far from a road.
OK so not quite the same... wrote:

Yea...
I'm a grad student here right now.
There's a paved like 3 mile bike path around campus to do loops on, if you're bored.
Then there's Blydenburg Park in Smithtown, but those trails are a bit sandy. Course it's an island.
If you get out early in the morning, you can hit up the little park near campus, I can't remember the name of it, but it's right on the corner of main st. and harbor rd. after 25a makes the bend. It's a small place but it's fun to add that into loops.
Other than that, over by Port Jeff there are some great hills, so that's fun. Or if you feel like keeping it flat stay south of 347 by Port Jeff station. 100% flat. The farther north you stay the better people in cars are. The farther south you get, the more crap you'll take.
Also there's a trail that cuts between 347 and 25a heading from Stony to Port Jeff. I think it's an old access road or something, a bunch of mountain bikers are on it all the time.
Sunken Meadow isn't terribly far away either. But I usually hit up Blydenburgh on Sundays if I want to get a long run in. There are tons of trails. Supposedly there's something in St. James as well.
lemme know if you have any questions, I got pretty confused when I came out here.
punted!

Thanks! It doesn't sound as bad as I thought it would be. Maybe I'll end up bumping into you somewhere over there. What are you studying over there? Do you find you have time to keep up a somewhat decent level of training?

I'm in the physiology department. So I spend most of my time on the hospital side of campus, across nichols rd. What department will you be in?
Yea you should have plenty of time for runs in the evening and such. I spend most of my day in lab from like 9-4 or 5, but I have plenty of time to come home and eat dinner and then run at 8 or so. Which is better during the summer.
hit me up in an email or something
republicanguy45@yahoo.comI just got a job at Stony Brook and moved out here. My plan is to run to work and back everyday. The biggest drawback I have seen is lack of sidewalks, but there are some great backroads through nice communities with little traffic.
As for trails (I don't use them much, glass ankles), there are quite a few large parks. I would assume there are trails.
