I am training for races from 5k to 10k in distance (15-32 mins) using the guidelines set forth in the Daniels Running Formula, but I have no 1 goal race from which to structure my training. Rather I have a 1 race every 3 to 8 weeks during the course of the year, each of close to equal importance. (plus I take a 10 day active break - jogging only - twice per year)
I am struggling with the scheduling of my quality workouts because of this spread in my races and no clear goal race. I am thinking that I may come up with a pattern for my quality workouts between races depending on the number of weeks before the next race.
Maybe something like this:
If I have 5 weeks before my next race my quality workouts would be:
week 1: Q1 - Threshold Q2 - Repetitions
week 2: Q1 - Threshold Q2 - Repetitions
week 3: Q1 - Intervals Q2 - Threshold
week 4: Q1 - Intervals Q2 - Threshold
week 5: Q1 - Repetitions Q2 - Race
The pattern would then change depending on the number of weeks before the next race but basically working on threshold and repetitions in the early weeks and VO2 max Intervals and Threshold in the later weeks and then just touching up with some repetitions early on in the week of the race.
If it helps: I do 2 quality workouts and long run each week in training with the remaining days being easy mileage.
Does this sound like the best way to approach this type of racing schedule.
