I am not with you, as to stringing piano wire across the 5th mile, even though I am a Colorado Buff fan and realize their guys would see others go down since the 6th mile is the time when they really gain ground. Regarding German and the NCAA cross title.......he really isn't a 10K guy yet and especially when it comes to running on golf courses. I expect him to have a top 15 finish as a freshman, top 3-5 as an upperclassman. His event will be the 5K if he de-Nikes and stays in college.
He isn't a 10k guy? Actually, he ran a 1:08 half-marathon, winning, his junior year coming off of injury -- he only ran 9:08 for 3200 (it may have been two miles, but it's not too important which) that year. It's 8k, not 10k, but he also won USATF junior XC against some very strong NCAA competition.
Fernandez's best event will be the 10K and perhaps eventually the marathon. Like (retrospectively) Ryan Hall, do not be fooled because he ran close to four minutes for the mile as a high schooler. That just shows his great potential at the longer distances. Unlike Ryan Hall, Fernandez will not be spending three years trying to be a miler.
