Siberian husky/australian cattle dog mix?

do you have children or plan to have children?

cattle dogs that are not socialized correctly often think that children are to be herded.

cattle dogs are very smart and need a job to do to be happy - also, cattle dogs really aren't that social with other dogs like at the dog park - they are people dogs and will look to you for direction.

cattle dogs do the job that they were bred to do by nipping at heels and butts - keep that in mind.

siberian huskies are working dogs too - they need a job and obedience training, sometimes they are difficult to housebreak and they will yap and howl a lot.

both need obedience training - cattle dogs are very smart - huskies will work you, so you need to be prepared to be the smart one and know how to react when they do whatever it is that they do.

since both breeds are working dogs and are very intelligent - you need to be able to spend a lot of time with them and provide them with plenty of physical and mental stimulation.

Cattle dogs are very high energy and won't take to being left in the house. You need a place with a lot of room to allow them to roam a bit, and you need to get them out every day and keep them busy. They are not real good suburban dogs, but if you have a place with a lot of room, they are great. A close friend has one, and that dog can cover 100m in a time that would make Tyson Homosexual (see other thread) green with envy. And do it 100 times in a row chasing a frisbee. And as noted, they are quite bright, and will look to you for a lot of direction.

I have 2 cow dogs, a collie/heeler mix and a catahoula leopard dog. The heeler is the perfect running partner, but her limit is about 10 miles. The only things she chases is the occasional bird, but that doesn't last long. She can be agressive around other dogs, and isn't fond of children, but gets along fine with them after time. She has never nipped at anything.

The Catahoula is a maniac. His 800m time is about 1:15, and he gives anything (including antelope) a good chase. I started shock collar training him last week, and he's responding very well. On long runs he eventually settles into the pack, but usually he just wants to chase things. He could easily cover 20 miles, and don't think it would phase him one bit.

The few Huskies I've known have no problem running long distances, but they have a thick coat that could pose a problem in the summer heat. I think a Husky/cow dog would be a great running dog, as long as you get it out.

I live "in the city", but have numerous empty trails within a 20 minute drive, so I get them out almost everyday. They do alright in a small backyard.

Get an alaskan huskie. Much easier to train than siberians and great personalities.

Absolutely correct. The question becomes, what do you do when its higher than 50 degrees and your dog can only run 2 miles (almost any husky mix). And can't run hard over 40 degrees. The really can run at 10 degrees! Husky mixes are excellent with children AS LONG AS YOU DO DAILY TRAINING. Otherwise they get spastic (this is apart from running with them every day). My border/husky also does herd the kids, which she has been trained not to bite seriously. But you have to watch if you have there friends over, as new kids are likely to freak out if the dog is biting there shoes.They're great dogs, good for sledding and xcskiing, but for a pure running companion in warmer weather you might be fooling yourself.Cheers!Oh yeah, you can't EVER let a husky of leash. The do not turn and run loops around you like other dogs. The hit the trail and run as hard as they can or until they kill a small animal.

Ok thanks for the advice. I am not looking for a huge dog so german shepards are out. I kind of want an australian shepard since most I know wont get that big. I want a puupy so no more than 2 to 3 months old. I want the aussie shepard but I am more looking for a dog I can take out a few times a week on runs like 6-8 miles at 7-730pace. I also want a dog that is friendly to animals and people and will also stick with me off lease. I wouldnt do city runs with her off lease but if I throw a ball in an open field I want her to come back and not go find out what the scent is that they just found. Also I plan to exercise the dog well. I would either take them on my easy morning runs and if they arent too tired then out again in the afternoon for some catch. But if I dont run I would take them to the park twice. Thanks

I have a black lab/husk mix. When he was younger his max in the summer was only about 5miles, but in the winter he could easily run 10-15 miles with me while I was on xc skies (I was a racer so he was averaging 6-7min/mile pace in the snow) It took about 2 mo. of daily leash training before I could run without tripping over him, but off a leash he is great, kept up and never let me out of his sight, and came when called. Sadly, he as had an ACL repair (slipped when jumping off the dock after a duck) so his runs now are only 2-3 mile jogs with my bf. His personality is great, good with kids and strangers and never really barked.

also - maybe the sibe/cattle dog is for you, maybe it isn't but, boulder humane society is a great place to look, they do really good work.

check out that ridgeback mix - "sage" and "drake" - retriever / great dane mix.

ridgebacks are hunters and bred to be out in the field all day - hunting lions - they are great. sage looks to be part ridgeback and part black lab, which would make for a nice mix - potentially.

I had a Husky and I live in Los Angeles. He never had a hard time in the heat - a Husky breeder told me their coats protect them from heat as well as cold.

For sure he was very smart, but as others have stated, they need obedience training. Actually, that's probably *because* they are so smart. Mine didn't make noise except for the very rare bay at the moon. He couldn't be let off the leash, for the reasons listed - he just ran like...an animal. I actually got him to pull me on my bike. Man I miss that dog.

The dog you're considering sounds like a great catch.

If you're wife is plus size, the cattle dog will try to heard her.

I had a yellow lab, Australian shepherd mix that could run for miles in all types of weather. Sweet disposition but hated getting wet, despite the lab in her. Shed like crazy. She died last year; still miss her.
