Looks like Babcock is calling it a season unless she makes it to the Olympic Trials.

Chanelle Price ran a gutsy race; however, her stride wasn't fluid as normal. At one of the greatest Pre track and field meet with a great deal of hype around her event due to Maria Mutola, Chanelle leds the race for 600m- WTG!!!
Chanelle appears to posses the speed required to break 2:00 but her lack of stamina in the homestrech is where she need improvement. I used to have high 21 second/low 22. second 200m speed and capable of running sub 57 minutes 10 miler in training but faced the same problem as Chanelle. Not too many coaches have their 800m runners doing (little slower than race pace) over distance intervals and that's what I think could help Chanelle, if she had a good base at the start of the season.
great point!
she is the future of the US Women's 800.
I am sure she could challenge in the 400 as well and
actually do okay (not great) but okay in the 1500
I get the feeling that she needs to learn to race, and this would have been a good opportunity to do so. Instead, she goes to the front and pushes for as long as she can and then reaps the rewards -- at this level, the reward is being past by five runners. A very good time for a HS runner, but not what she needs if she wants to race at the Trials.
I get the feeling that Chanelle Price main goal is sub 2 minutes for the HSR and also what most likely will be needed to make the Olympic Trials. She is doing the right thing as not all 800m runners can sit off the pace and kick-there are those who must use they speed early in the race. (ie Mark Everett, Jearl Miles Clark, Joaquim Cruz, Tony Parilla)
Chanelle Price small flaw as a high school athlete isn't with her tactics but just her lack of stamina at the end. She is doing what she needs to do to achieve her goal; however, my concern is have she done/or currently doing the speed stamina training that will allow her to improve the later part of her race!
Chanelle Price actually did better than I previously thought as she set a personal best by 1.29 seconds. After Maria stepped in front of her to take the lead it appeared Chanelle faded badly but she held it together to improve and still on pace for the first High School female sub 2 min. GREAT JOB Chanelle Price!

It looked like she rigged up pretty good and I figured she was around 2:04. I guess she fought hard down the homestrech and had a impressive run. She's getting closer to the HSR by the way what number is she on the high school 800m list now?

behind the legend.
no one admits they're on a high mileage system during recruitment... it'd be straight up stupid to say "hey here's the finished product, take it or leave it." so they sugar coat it, notice she's not posting a daily log of some sort on the internet....
what about Jeff Demps of Florida.... the man can move, and by far has the most compelling case for making the team....
Jeff Demps was very impressive but he is hardly the high schooler most likely to make the U.S. Olympic Team nor the U.S World Junior Team. As good as Jeff Demps is Chanelle Price is currently competing at a higher level.
in regards to U.S. 2007 Yearly List
W800m: Chanelle Price 2:01.61 would place her 9th fastest
M100m: Jeff Demps 10.19 would place him 20th fastest
Jeff Demps, Chanelle Price, German Fernandez, Jordan Hasay etc could all make the U.S. World Junior Track and Field; however, only one high schooler have a reasonable shot at the U.S. Olympic Team and she ran the 800m at Pre.

No matter how big a fan of hers you may be, you can't make Price into a smart racer. Yes, she has a better chance than Babcock, Fernandez, etc. to compete in the trials, but running 57/64 for a 2:01 is not smart racing. You're no better than the idiotic tv announcers who always seem to be saying how the rabbit is going out at "a decent pace" when in fact it's world record pace. Every race I've ever heard about with Price it's been her running a ridiculous positive split. This most recent one isn't even close to the worst, but it's still sad that she is in sub-2 shape right now, but won't put herself in a position to run it. Maybe she can't "sit and kick off the pace", but come on, what does that even mean? No one runs an 800 with a negative split, i.e. 61-58, but she could easily come through at 59 point and not tank the last 200 for a 1:59. Without some intelligence, she might as well not run the trials, because she'll get passed by 7-8 smarter women during the final 100.

Spoken like a guy who's never run a really competitive 800(nor coached a high level athlete.) A few more cracks at it, and the 57/64 becomes a 58/61 or 57/62 for 1:59.
For someone with good speed, there'd be little difference in effort between 57/61 and 59?61.
Very nice post very simple, short, and indentified the BS. Stop The Parade shouldn't even made his post, how many women can run 59 and 60 for a 1:59. I guarantee you it's alot less than he thinks!
I can't believe it's not been said yet so I guess i will. Price could break 2 easily if she wasn't carrying around 20 extra lbs on her chest. She needs to lose some weight, she outweighed the rest of the field by at least 15-20 lbs. Don't get me wrong, she was impressive but a couple of lost pounds could get her on the US team. And look for Rowbury to win the 1500 at the trials, there is NO way she's going to run the 800 at the trials.
And how would you advise her to lose some weight before the Trials go on a starvation diet, that wouldn't be smart. Maybe she will became abit leaner when she start doing higher mileage like the pros she was running against in Pre.
If Chanelle lost 10-15 pounds she would be too weak to approach her personal best not to even think about making the US team. I do agree with you on Shannon as I think she was just working on speed and even stated after her 4:01, "I won't be doing too many 1500m before the trials."
If you were Chanelle's coach would you advise her to go to USATF and run just qualify for World Juniors just in case she doesn't make the Olympic team?
The USATF Jr Trials
800m heat/semi..........June 20
800m FINAL..............June 21
USA Olympic Trials
800m heat...............June 27
she would one day for short travel and five days rest from the final at USATF to the heat of Olympic Trials. She could run 2:04 and not exhaust herself in the USATF final.
