From my understanding, gait is how your foot hits the ground...is that right? Is over-pronation considered a gait? My coach is always talking about how my gait is a little off...What is that supposed to mean?

Are you Cinna?
no...who's Cinna?
From Shakespeare's Julius Caesar
CASCA
Stand close awhile, for here comes one in haste.
CASSIUS
'Tis Cinna; I do know him by his gait;
He is a friend.
Enter CINNA
Cinna, where haste you so?
To my understanding, your running gait is overall the way your body works while you run. It is how your feet hit the ground, what direction your legs impact and lift off, etc. Tiny, seemingly insignificant flaws in your gait are usually responsible for re-occuring injuries. For example, when I ran, a muscular imbalance caused my knees to move overly inward and upon impact take out all the force on my shins. I was highly vulnerable to stress fractures until I strengthed a muscle in my toes to anchor my gait. Now that I have a more efficient gait, I am able to train with a far smaller risk of injury. Over-pronation wouldn't be a 'type of gait,' but it would be a gait problem.
