Does anyone know what he's been up to?
Does anyone know what he's been up to?
I heard from a friend that he hasn't run in years and weighs 250+lbs? I find that hard to believe. His weight was about 145lbs in his prime.
Is this true?
145 seems high, I would guess he had to be in the 125 range in his prime.
He was the man back then.
I think he is still in Albuquerque
Runner's World, I think it was, had a picture and short article on him about two years ago. I believe he was in the Albuquerque area, working in the building industry. He was obviously not the same hollow-cheeked, 135-pounder of yesteryear, but 250+ sounds mighty high.
~250 is a good guess in my estimation
Wasn't he Lasse Viren in one of the recent Pre movies?
That cheetah tattoo on his upper thigh must look like a fat, old, toothless lion by now...with all due respect though, as he WAS one of the baddest cross runners ever.
Pat is in Albuq., was doing finance for large auto dealer, now for a developer. Wife Trish broke 40+ masters record in HJ this year. He is larger than his "Panther" days, but nowhere near 250.
Yes, Pat Porter played Viren in "Without Limits"
Why would anyone settle down in Alb NM when Texas is so close?
It's a panther not a cheetah. This was one of the dumbest things of all time: Porter gave himself the nickname "the panther" and then got the tattoo. Memo to Pat: people do not nickname themselves. It's sorry as can be. Like talking about yourself in the third person. Ugh. Pitiful.
Great photo of Porter here:

Anyone know if the "Porterhouse" is still in existence?
That pic of Sam Montoya shows a very rough cat, wow.

I don't know man... I mean I hear ya, NM is way too close to Texas.
Poor New Mexico, so far from heaven, so close to Texas.....
Sam the animal was a real tough guy, and a real talent to boot. Those were the days ay Adams State. Joe Vigil took more guys that were pretty good and turned them in to national class runners than any other coach. Plenty of coaches have shown the ability to turn national class athletes into good club runners. Thanks, Joe, for all you've done over the years.

Exactly, in similar fashion Marc Davis gave himself the nickname "the doc". Ugh. Pitiful.

Bob, you're right about Coach Vigil. I had the honor of running for him in college and most of my teammates were good high school runners that Vigil made into great collegiate runners. Porter, and Sam Montoya never placed in the top 10 in the Colo. state XC meet, yet, they went on to great XC careers at Adams. Runners like Dave Cuadrado and Rick Robirds ran 10:24 and 9:45 in high school, and went on to run 28:35 and 28:22 respectively for 10,000m. John Esquibel never broke 5 min. in the mile before college, yet went on to win 2 national mile titles at ASC....and on and on. Coach Vigil got more out of his runners than any other coach. Many are indebted to him
What was Adams State's training like under vigil? High mileage I'm assuming? I think I remember reading that they did mile repeats in a park somewhere in Alamosa almost every week.
Montoya is teaching 4th graders in Colorado Springs. Crazy Indian but a good guy with tons of talent and ... a drinking problem. Think Shannon Butler in 1980.
